About this deal

One slight downside is that the more you ramp up the volume, the more likely it is that you’ll lose out on things like bass clarity.

However, the provided cable does allow you to use the Minirig’s battery to charge your mobile devices. There’s enough juice onboard to fully charge an iPhone 6 Plus once or an iPhone 4S twice. Various additions and changes make this speaker more impressive than ever, including a new custom-built 70mm driver with wonderfully deep bass, and a fantastic 100-hour battery life. If you walked by the Minirig Bluetooth speakers on the high street, you probably wouldn't have given them a second look. The outer housing is pretty bland, industrial, and to the point. It doesn't come across as funky and unique as the UE Flip or as classy and elegant as the Beoplay A1 from Bang & Olufsen. The sound on a single Minirig speaker was matched only by the Beoplay A1 in my side-by-side testing. It managed to get louder and maintain a high level of detail before any JBL, Gear4, or Taotronics units started to distort. Even when pushed way past the comfortable listening point, the sound doesn't degrade as sharply as any of those units. The clarity and detail retrieved at normal levels are remarkable for something so small.

Step Three

You’ll need the right cable to plug from your DJ gear to a Minirig, and the supplied cables will then let you connect them together. You can even connect two Minirig 3s and TWO subwoofers if you really want. This can of course get fiddly – fiddlier than single speakers with everything built in – but that modularity can also be seen as a plus point, as you can choose what to set up depending upon the circumstances. The cables supplied are OK, but a bit short and not as good as pro cables – you’ll probably want to replace them at some point with something stronger and possibly longer. When DJing

Last month I was down in London meeting up with about 20 or so other audio fans. Everyone had come together to show off their latest and greatest portable gear. Loads of high-end stuff were set out for us to play about with; the usual headphones, amps, DACs, and DAPs littered the tables; it was a nerds paradise. So it was kind of strange that, on this occasion, the product I came away most impressed with was a tiny portable Bluetooth speaker. It wasn't just me though, a lot of people had been blown away by the Minirig Bluetooth speaker, a modular speaker unit that was pumping out the beats when we arrived in the reception area. What are Minirigs? A testament to how well the Minirig holds up through punishment is that it has been on three long-distance motorbike and camping trips with me. The first is from Deli to Shimla in the Himalayas, the second is the full length of Vietnam, and the latest the up the spine of the Peruvian Andes and through Colombia. You can toggle between high and low gain (volume) when the subwoofer is on by pressing the button ONCE.

At the top of the tube, you will find all the accessories and extras, and at the bottom, you will see the Minirig 3 inside its fitted carry case. For the Minirig Mini and Minirig 3 we use a DSP (digital signal processor) to apply EQ and limiters to the sound. There is a latency (delay) associated with this as audio does an analog-to-digital-to-analog conversion. It is VERY short, however - less than 1000th of a second (<1ms). Inside the Minirigs app, you will also find support for a five-band EQ system that allows you to custom tweak the sound of your speaker. I was surprised just how well the speaker took the EQing because I have had some units struggle in this regard in the past. Link-Up Mode
