Annuals: Annual plants complete their life cycle in one growing season and are a great option for adding bursts of colour to your raised flower bed. Some popular annuals to consider include petunias, marigolds, zinnias, snapdragons, and cosmos. We’ve seen this design a lot, and it’s certainly a good way to get the most out of what little space there is in a van. Location: The location of your planter or raised bed is also important. You’ll want to choose a spot that gets plenty of sunlight, ideally at least six hours a day. You should also consider factors such as wind, access to water, and proximity to other plants or structures that could impact the growth of your plants.

As you can see it’s quite deep and will require a lot of soil to fill it. This was intentional for us as we filled it will all the soil we dug out for our ‘ in ground trampoline‘. With the area clear I laid some weed protection and started to put some of the wood into place. When we first started out van build, storage was our main concern, so we built the bed high to fit bicycles underneath.

Level off the area underneath the side walls and place guides at the 4 corners. Then assemble the planks ensuring you have a correct 90-degree angle at the corners. Continue to add planks sequentially until your planter is completed. A year on and we’ve added a porcelain tile patio and painted the planter grey to match the rest of the garden. If you have a corner to fill this is a beautiful way to do it. Place two wooden benches in an L shape with a planter between them.Here’s another example where we build this raised planter bed for growing bamboo. The bamboo provides an enclosed space in which the bamboo can grow but restrict its ability to spread. We’ve also made use of the underneath section for some additional log storage. Make your planter multi-use by integrating a storage section into the bottom of it. This storage area could be used to store watering cans, a hose, or anything else that makes gardening easier. Just add 2 vertical gardening planter boxes beside it! If the planters are a little unstable, attach them to your bench. This is worth doing if you have balls being thrown around, boisterous pets or younger gardeners. The bench may be overly popular with adolescents for weekend snoozes but can double up as an area where parents and grandparents can have that afternoon nap (I mean, read the newspaper of course!). Beds with a drawbridge style mattress close to one side similar to a murphy bed but the mattress folds like an accordion instead of staying flat.
