About this deal

From 1942, Douglas Berneville-Claye served in the Special Air Service in North Africa under its hero founder David Stirling and key second in command Paddy Mayne. And at one point, some Italian soldiers tagged along with them, believing Stirling’s men to be Germans on a drill (which is depicted in the episode).

Over time this embittered Stirling. I think he appointed Mayne as a training officer to take him out of action and claim successes of his own, which he didn’t do.” Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair 'Paddy' Mayne is pictured right in Norway in 1945. The SAS wreaked havoc against German and Italian positionsInstead, the consequence of eye-catching raids that did short-term damage to the enemy was a high casualty rate and the use of resources that could have been used elsewhere. In reality, the mission was – as described by members of the Long Range Desert Group, which ferried the SAS in and out of enemy territory – “a Gilbert and Sullivan farce”. Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci's daughter Deva, 19, reveals how her parents helped her modelling career as she stars on the cover of V Magazine

The overall depiction of Mayne is “OTT” according to Mortimer. “I sympathise with his family,” he adds. He [Sadler] told me the story that he and Stirling were in a bar in Paris and somebody said "you can't use this table, we are using it all night",' Knight said, according to the Telegraph.

Whilst their value to the Germans was largely as an instrument of propaganda, Claye is believed to have been the only British Army officer to have donned the uniform of an SS Captain and commanded the BFC. Ms Metcalfe added: 'Douglas had been a traitor for his country. I felt sullied by my association with him.' The exact nature of their relationship is unknown and to some extent, owing to the paucity of documents, unknowable.
