About this deal

Cereal bars… but not as you know it! This recipe is inspired by what I believe is one of the best flavours around, but one which not many people talk about. Underrated if you will. It’s a flavour that I (like many I’m wiling to bet) associate with my childhood; malty, sweet and moreish… I am of course, talking about cereal milk.

Special K fruit & nut/oats & honey/original/red berries/creamy berry crunch– 4.5 syns for 25g, chocolate – 5 syns for 25g. Despite being made from high-fibre grains, many popular cereals are low in fibre as the fibre is removed during processing. First you will need to pre heat your oven to 170c and grease and line a 23cm square baking tin. Naturally, square tins work best for cakes that you will cut into square or rectangular shapes. (Funny that!) Many companies, including smaller ones like like Infinity Foods, Doves Farm, and Rude Health, are moving towards soft plastics that can be recycled.

Your cereal milk is now ready. Drain the cereal but keep the milk! This will form your icing. Use a sieve to separate the cereal from the milk or better yet a cheese cloth. Give the cereal a good squeeze to get out as much milk as possible. Once separated, add your Frosties to the cake batter and stir in. This will give your cake a lovely malty taste and extra moisture. For a ready to eat cereal that is an even more heart-healthy start to the day, swap for a shredded whole wheat cereal or no added sugar or salt muesli (see above) as these don’t contain any added sugar or salt. Wholegrain cereals like bran flakes, malted wheat cereal and wheat biscuits are high in fibre and will also have sugar and salt added to them usually, so avoid adding any more sugar and opt for fruits or berries for sweetness. The wholegrains mean they are high in fibre and so have benefits for your digestion too as well as your heart health. No added sugar muesli contains a mixture of grains, fruit and nuts and the combination will differ between brands and varieties so the amount of oat beta glucans will be more variable than porridge, which is made only of oats. The dried fruit that is added should provide all the additional sweetness you need and will also count towards your five a day but choose a muesli with no added sugar and be aware that many fruit and nut mueslis (especially tropical fruit versions) contain sweetened dried fruit, which means they have sugar added even if it isn’t listed separately on the ingredients. Banana chips are another popular muesli ingredient that will contain added sugars and saturated fats.Compare that to Alara’s organic fruit and seeds muesli which was only 46p per 100 g. Dorset Cereals simply fruity muesli, a more directly comparable product, was more expensive at 54p per 100 g. Quaker porridge oats were 28p per 100 g and we found Essential organic porridge oats online for the same price. So, in many cases, the ethical – and healthy – option will save you some money too. Typical prices of some cereals and flakes Brand If you're up for making your own cereal bars, Weetabix has the fewest calories and is overall one of the healthiest cereal bars you can find on the supermarket shelves. Our palm oil rating is more lenient for smaller companies, but for all sizes of company it requires that, as a minimum, all palm ingredients are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil ( RSPO). Although certification does not mean there will be no problems in the supply chain, it is likely to drive some improvements for the environment, animals, and people. Regenerative agriculture is not a clearly defined term and understandings of it differ. Broadly, it refers to agricultural practices that are not only sustainable but, in some way, restore the environment. These practices have the potential to develop the soil as a carbon sink and thereby cut emissions and it’s this that makes them attractive to big food companies. We couldn’t find out why its Shredded Wheat brand is wrapped in paper but its other brands like Cheerios are wrapped in plastic.

Porridge is our top choice for a heart healthy breakfast – when it is made with low-fat milk or water and unsweetened. All porridge oats are wholegrains and they all contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which can help lower your cholesterol level if you have 3g or more of it daily, as part of a healthy diet. (A 40g serving of porridge oats contains 1.6g of beta-glucan.) As well as this, you’ll be getting the fibre from the whole grains, plus there is no added sugar or salt.

Where To Buy

To begin making your cereal cake bars, we’ll start with making the cereal milk. In a bowl add your milk and Frosties. Give them a little stir, making sure they’re all submerged in the milk then simply leave them to sit whilst you prepare the cake batter. Your milk is going to soak up all the sugary deliciousness. Most companies use recyclable cardboard for their boxes, and some of this cardboard is already recycled. Rob adds that when looking for healthy cereal bars, seek out those with ingredients like oats and dried fruits and forego chocolate. The proportion that are low in sugar is only 7% and the average sugar content per 100 g is 18 g (roughly the same as Nice biscuits). What about making your own cereal bars with all your favourite ingredients? This is one of the best healthy breakfast ideas for kids as they can get involved.
