The HD3 speaker comes with an interesting bass reducer switch. When activated, this toggle switch reduces bass, so an optional subwoofer can do all the heavy bass lifting. Unfortunately, the HD4 has no bass reducer switch. However, the HD4 speakers have audio-out RCA ports for connecting a sub. Since I have an under-the-desk subwoofer, I consider a sub-out port a necessity on any desktop speaker. While the HD4 speakers can put out a decent amount of bass on their own, having that extra subwoofer can (and does) make all the difference! Note that Audioengine makes a subwoofer that perfectly matches their speakers. I personally use a trusted older Polk Audio sub for my speakers.
Our Installation Service only includes connecting to existing points and fixings. This does not include installing or moving plumbing, connection points or electrics. You may have noticed that there’s no USB input, which reinforces my belief that Audioengine really doesn’t expect people to put these speakers on their desktop. Nor is there Wi-Fi, as Audioengine wants the wireless hookup to be as painless and intuitive as possible. The Bluetooth implementation includes both the aptX and AAC codecs in addition to the standard SBC, so good-quality streaming really shouldn’t be a problem. If you are using a wireless adapter, preamp, or external DAC with these speakers, remove these (temporarily) and connect the audio source directly to the speakers. Perhaps the most important aspect to consider when buying new speakers is how much does sound quality matter to you? The volume knob is the only way to tell left from right when you’re looking at the speakers from the front, but if you spin the HD6s around, you’ll discover that the left speaker contains all of the business parts. The right HD6 is simply a passive speaker with a pair of binding posts that let you connect it to its amplifier housed in the left speaker. A 12-foot length of speaker cable nicely terminated with banana plugs is provided to do the job.
