About this deal

a big helping of recognisable small town life, a suitably menacing air of malevolence, an undercurrent of suspense, lashings of Yorkshire wit and a seductively simmering relationship between handsome Sansom and the delightful Delilah. Last year the series was also made into a ratings winner, primetime TV show in France, where the books regularly hit the bestseller charts. Centred around the enigmatic Lady Audley, newly arrived at Audley Court, the mystery of her dark past slowly unfolds into what must have been a scandalous conclusion in its day. Merry Folger, newly-promoted detective carrying the weight of coming from a long line of local police chiefs, is up against it in her first murder case. And rather than describing crowded streets and the mayhem of city life, my eyes were drawn to the rainbow colours on the ewes’ rear ends as the breeding season got into full swing!

Overall I think this is totally worth it, it has all the cozy vibes one could want, characters that are fun and with depth, a dog that is the most lovable thing, a slight romantic touch and a lot of mystery. To date, Saffron Cherry has created and produced The Madame Blanc Mysteries for Channel 5 and Acorn TV (a co-production with Clapperboard), the double award winning The World According to Grandpa for Channel 5’s Milkshake! The series stars Delilah Metcalfe, who is a young woman that makes a living while running a dating agency. But in this book, everything fits - and I really think that the author did great work connecting the dots of a complex mystery backstory spread across all the previous books. It was disconcerting at times – trying to remember all the facets of the stunning Pyrenean scenery while living amongst the fells of Northern England.Written in 1862, and described more recently as the original Gone Girl, this was a massive success in its time. Samson O’Brien has gotten dismissed from the force, and comes back to his hometown of Bruncliffe in the Yorkshire Dales to form the Dales Detective Agency as he struggles to clear his own name. The endearing inhabitants of Bruncliffe are back, banding together with good old Yorkshire grit, this time to foil an organised crime gang who, improbably, are running a drugs/people trafficking ring out of a bunch of old farm sheds. They get better with each book and we get to see more and more characters that add a lot to the story – old people, a rich guy, questionable characters, all together shady characters, a fun as hell cleaner/maid, and so much more! I have a confession to make before I start this review – I love Bruncliffe and all its inhabitants, I was itching to get back to the town.

In terms of ratings, I can imagine that those readers invested in the goings on in Bruncliffe and the Dales Detective Agency it’s a clear winner but it proved a bit of a struggle for me without experience of the earlier books. Groundhog Day meets Agatha Christie, it's a rollicking, jumbled up, mishmash of a time-travelling, body-hopping murder mystery that leaves the reader as puzzled as Aiden, the man tasked with identifying Evelyn's murderer. Je ne sais pas si c'est le dernier tome, mais l'enquête fil rouge du début est désormais résolue et je trouve ça bien qu'elle ne se soit pas trop étirée en longueur.I have enjoyed this series immensely from book one and would say please read the other books before this one as this brings together threads from a few of the previous books. Little do the detective duo know that several of their cases are about to collide when identifying the whereabouts of the missing man becomes something far more sinister.

In the eighth novel in the Dales Detective series, Date with Evil , Samson and Delilah are about to discover that all of their new cases may be connected to a network of evil that seems to be surrounding Bruncliffe. I loved Delilah and Samson together, they turn out to be a really good combo – good for each other and their business. While I was trying to plot murder in the city, I was constantly noticing the shade of the heather on the hills as September bleeds into October. Then when Samson gets his very first case, working on the supposed suicide of a local guy, things take a rather unexpected turn, and he quickly finds a series of deaths which lead right to the door of her agency.

Once all three of these cases start to converge on each other, Delilah and Samson are going to find that their latest investigation is fraught with some danger.

When Mrs Shepherd arrives at the Dales Detective Agency on a December morning, quite convinced that someone is trying to kill her, Samson O’Brien dismisses her fears as the ramblings of a confused elderly lady. The Dales Detective series will be developed by Saffron Cherry’s Caroline Roberts-Cherry and Head of Scripted Jane Langford (Hollyoaks, Metastasis, Jordskott S2, Origin). As usual, the secondary characters are highly entertaining, and many play an important role in this volume. A classic whodunit set in the spectacular landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, written with affection for the area and its people.
