It sounds pretentious to say you can feel the love and passion that goes into food cooked by a food lover who also happens to be a superb chef, but it’s true.

It said everything I wanted to say about the food so I changed tack and this came out, which started as my intro but is now my reminisce. I had no idea who he was until after he’d eaten for, in true Marina O’Loughlin style, Martin reviews incognito.We’d come together as friends and eating companions because of our shared love of this small Italian restaurant in Sheffield.

It came with chicory, the biggest pine nuts I have seen, olives and sultanas and a sort of pretzel, a tarollo Napoletano, which I had not previously encountered, rather like a hard biscuit. The meat had held together but the texture was so soft and tender you could have sucked it up through a straw. We had decided to get to Verogusto a little earlier than our table was booked so that we could enjoy a cocktail in the little side bar before our meal.Similarly with Gusto, in fact he actually made it the subject of his last ever review before he retired. I was scared about moving countries (especially because I spoke very little English), but Saverio was so enthusiastic about the whole idea. This was our first visit to Verogusto and it most definitely won’t be our last, it was truly an amazing experience.

Whether you are in the mood for a hearty bowl of spaghetti bolognese or a mouthwatering margherita pizza, you can expect nothing but the best from our kitchen. If I’d known then the hours we’d spend sitting at that little bar after dinner (we always seemed to be the last to leave, strange that) drinking grappa and suffering the next day…. Some years earlier, I’d had a little correspondence with Martin Dawes, then the much loved and respected food critic for the Sheffield Star newspaper. We even did an all dayer once, starting with morning coffee then lunch, then wine, then cake then dinner and were the last to leave that evening (we’d wisely allowed the next day for recovery). Now that’s what caught my attention because at that point I was going for the duck but was mentally grumbling I’d have to pay extra for spuds.

Vero Gusto is the best Italian Restaurant, not only in Sheffield but in the many places I have visited both in the U.

The service was curt rather than friendly and still at the end no mention of the 21st although we were offered a liqueur like everyone else. COVID-19 hit us hard, but it also gave us time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we want to go from here. And to think, when at Church Street they were thinking of packing it in until a rave restaurant review turned their fortunes around.And just to make me feel that nothing ever really changes too much, we were, once again, the last to leave. was squid, prawns and courgette flowers in the wispiest of batter, more negligee than Winceyette pyjamas. Quietly nestled between the cobbled streets of Sheffield City Centre, VeroGusto has stolen the hearts of all South Yorkshire’s fine-dining fanatics.
