About this deal

It goes on like this. Monument Maker is at least, well, original. Most contemporary fiction is insipid and formulaic; I’d rather read a confused novel like this one than something I’ve read hundreds of times before. So, Keenan deserves due credit for his ambition and fearlessness. But this doesn’t mean Monument Maker is a good book. EDNA O'BRIEN I sometimes think David Keenan dreams aloud. His prose has the effortless enigmatic, unsettling quality of dream

Styles of Custom Monuments and Headstones Engravings of musical instruments, including guitar, piano, harmonica, brass instruments, and others, as well as musical symbols or notation.Monuments are symbols of endurance in more ways than one. They’re constructed to withstand through multiple generations and centuries, always there for the visits of loved ones, friends, even strangers. What’s Monument Makerabout? God? Art? Love? Time travel? Cult connections and failed erections? Search me. What does Keenan think? He’s not big on what’s-it-all-about questions when it comes to his work.

Monument Maker came through our house because of the Cybils Awards. Had I not been a judge, I would have passed it over. The cover is grey and shows the Lincoln Memorial – not particularly eye-catching or exciting. I would have glanced at it and thought, "Huh. Don't really want to read about the Lincoln Memorial." And that would have been a mistake. The premise of the book is rather straightforward. French loved the outdoors, where he would sketch endlessly. He tended the family farm, working his artistry into the plowing of the fields and repairs to the fences and outbuildings. Having grown up during the Civil War, he was influenced by the event and its idealistic aspects, especially those espoused by his Transcendentalist neighbors.

Memorials also represent the endurance of the human spirit. They depict the nature and quality of the life they honor, the elements the departed held closest to their hearts and defined them to others. This book tells the story of Dan French who was the sculptor that created the Lincoln Memorial. The book starts with Dan as a small child and how he struggles to find what he wants to do growing up. When he finally discovers his love for art and sculpting he begins studying different styles and artists to help him grow his talent. The book also talks about how the Lincoln Memorial was created. At the end of the book, there is a timeline and other resources about Dan French.

From there we move to Africa, to Edinburgh... and this is only the beginning. But it is clear from the start that, despite the great detail, Keenan is not primarily concerned with people or place. There’s something else going on.

By (author) David Keenan

These are some of the questions posed by David Keenan’s Monument Maker, an epic romance set in an eternal summer, and a descent into history and the errors of the past; a novel with a sweep and range that runs from the siege of Khartoum and the conquest of Africa in the 19th century through the Second World War and up to the present day, where the memories of one summer and an unforgettable love affair unravel. Knowing his journey to this culminating monument of Lincoln, the book also becomes the story of Lincoln. By the time it was to be created, Daniel was already famous and his friend, Henry Bacon, an architect that had been chosen as the designer of the memorial, wanted French to create the statue. That part itself is fascinating.

The IdeaBook’s collection of customized gravestones, monuments, and tombstone designs includes images that depict the most essential interests, beliefs, connections, and work to represent what departed loved ones were most passionate about. IdeaBook images feature themes that convey aspects deeply related to the history of the departed, including: Linda Sweeney remedies that in this fascinating book the combines a biography of sculptor Daniel Chester French with an excellent explanation of the process of creating the memorial. She marries the two stories very well with interesting and informative writing. Sweeney tells both stories in language that will be easily understood by young readers and yet manages at the same time to craft both a complicated technical process and a real sense of this remarkable artist and his artistic journey. I really appreciated the introduction of the other artists who were involved in the monument. Keenan believes in God - “I’ve always been religious” - and he believes in Art. “I believe art can transform your life - it’s true because it transformed mine.” In a dizzying gyroscopic vortex of inner archeology, David Keenan sifts through spiraling past lives to unearth his provocative vision of the future. A colossus of imagination' LENNY KAYEI liked it. I liked how he made that statue, how he sent them in pieces because I've never heard of that. I felt all the feelings [while reading]. I felt angry because of the war and sad that Lincoln died. Over the course of a hilarious chat about jewellery, collecting shoes and a tour of Basinski’s Los Angeles home, there was a palpable sense of two artists sharing a common attitude towards grief and humanity. In completely different ways, Basinski and Keenan commemorate lost souls by creating permanence in music and literature, one of the highest achievements of art. Keenan says, “I think literature should show us how spectacular, miraculous and unique existence is. I wanted to thank God for the moment, for the miracle of life. So many books these days are just dreary critiques. I wanted a book that said YES! A book that was grateful to the glory of beauty and love and art.” Their manifesto, Two Way Mirror, is translated by one of Keenan’s narrators, a nameless Scottish man, who also spends a great deal of time recounting a sordid summer love affair with a woman called Flower, whom he met whilst touring the cathedrals of Ile de France.
