Body Horror: Creatures infected by the fungus have lungs full of it. It's explicitly noted that this process dissolves all of the structures inside the lungs (they're not hollow bags, there's stuff in there) to make room. And it gets worse from there. Bioluminescence Is Cool: The lake lights up at night like stars. It's strange glowing algae, and Alex notes that ka has seen similar on sailing ships. We both looked into the water of the tarn. It lay dark and very still, reflecting the grotesque mushrooms and the limp gray sedges along the edge of the shore. It could have been five feet deep or fifty-five. TK: It’s a horror movie thing, you know, the music ratchets up. And then there’s the music sting, and then it’s the cat. You’re like, oh, okay, thank God. And then the serial killer’s right behind you. Beyond this novella being better than the original it is engaging, gripping, atmospheric and hits all the Gothic notes. I loved the use of, well, the “bad guy” here. It is extremely realistic and classically scary. If I had not known better, I would have thought this story came from Poe’s time.

T. Kingfisher spins biting wit, charm and terror into a tale that will make your skin crawl. Poe would be proud!”—Brom, author of Slewfoot Set in the mid twentieth century, the story is a creative twist on Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. It has all the important elements to brew up a great story and some extra special ingredients which really makes it a unique read. When Easton travels to Gallacia as a favor to Miss Potter, they find their home empty, the caretaker dead, and the grounds troubled by a strange, uncanny silence. This interesting retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's classic "The Fall of the House of Usher " will have up so late at night finishing one of the most beautiful poetic tales of the year! What a fabulous book! I was so excited to receive a copy because I've really enjoyed the author's previous novels. What Moves The Dead exceeded all of my high expectations. Beyond characterization (which continues to be one of the areas in which T. Kingfisher far surpasses most writers) the setting for this book was astounding and was incredibly vivid. As I read this book, I felt the decay that was described in the Usher home and I felt the eerieness and outlandishness of the strange happenings around that home. Also Kingfisher is one of the best at writing animals. Alongside the dog in The Twisted Ones and the stuffed otter in The Hollow Places, Easton's horse is now one of my favorite fictional animals. Also the hares were fascinating and are image that is going to rattle in my head for a long time to come.

Book Review: ‘What Moves the Dead’ is an Eerie, Scientific

This is the type of retelling that does not go way too much of the original one, but there's beauty in that, in changing just a bit in certain places to create something new. I really loved the take the author chose for this story, and yes it certainly causes both awe and horror. Do not skip the author’s note if you want to know more about how and why this retelling was born! I’m so glad she decided to complete this novella! I loved it!First, Vernon aimed to turn a short story into a full-length novel without altering or expanding its core plot. While staying true to the source material is something to applaud in certain instances, I believe this has worked against her here, and the book is ultimately too uneventful to feel satisfactory despite its modest length: Easton shows up at the Usher estate, and despite the elegant and tightly-scripted progression, she kind of just stumbles along until the mycologist puts the pieces she has found together. It feels a bit from-the-sky, and I wanted Alex Easton to have a moment of brilliance that matched that of her conception.

Historical Character's Fictional Relative: The British mycologist is not Beatrix Potter, renowned mycologist and children's book author. She's her fictional relative, who has a lot in common. When you’re writing a children’s book, it shares much relation with horror, because it has to be usually very immediate and very visceral and gripping. Because otherwise the kids are gonna get bored. And your window of opportunity to grab the reader is … longer with horror, you can do the slow creeping dread better, but you have to grab the reader, metaphorically, by the throat.”

B&N: So, we should say, you know, retellings, reimaginings, and like theory and adjacent pieces. So for many of us, you know, those are sort of our first brush. That’s my first question, you know, fiction and fantasy and what is it about these sort of stories that kind of never leave us and we’re instantly attracted to them whether we’re 12 years old or whether we’re 112? Driven to Suicide: Madeline's maid killed herself by jumping from the roof. She was infected by the Tarn and enlisted as a host for Madeline to teach it, but found the whole thing too horrible to deal with.B&N: So we sort of have this retellings and reimaginings around fairy tales and mythology and folklore and now classics, so very much on trend, I would say, across all ages, so you’ve explored fairy tales before in Bryony and Roses, you’ve got The Raven & The Reindeer and most recently, Nettle & Bone, which I know is not truly a retelling, but it very much captures sort of the fairy tale vibe. Hob sighed in the manner of horses who find the world not to their liking and gazed off into the distance. TK: I can’t sustain a serious for longer than a short story. Like all my books, inevitably people are like, this is horror, but it’s so funny. And I’m like, Yeah, I don’t really have a choice. Where Poe told us the what in his short story, Kingfisher fills us in on the why and does it in an utterly believable and beautifully horrific manner. I was unable to put this one down, despite knowing the inevitable ending because the gaps that Poe had left us with, were finally being filled in.
