Evett IW (1996) Expert evidence and forensic misconceptions of the nature of exact science. Sci Justice 36:118–12 For the purposes of the ‘Segmentation’ of Handwriting and Signatures, segments are writing elements considered in isolation, such as whole words, or parts of words separated by pen lifts. The following example shows the same sentence copied by two different people. The handwriting samples are scanned and segmented using computer software. The segments between pen lifts are then numbered and indicated by slashes. This is followed by the transfer of each segment to the alphabetical (first letter) home, the segmentation table. A teacher would automatically notice misshaped letterforms which need attention, or “wrong-way-round” letter combinations typical of dyslexia or laterally inverted b’s or d’s as well as other characteristics of pupils’ writing. Typically, a handwriting expert witness will first examine a questioned document to determine whether it contains enough of the subject’s handwriting to allow the expert to identify its unique characteristics. If so, the expert will seek to obtain another adequate sample of a subject’s handwriting. The expert compares the characteristics that appear in both samples and forms an opinion as to whether the document in question matches the known sample. When Is a Handwriting Expert Witness Useful? For example, two people may form their y’s similarly, but the letters will be a different size. Two other people may have writing of the exact same size, but one of them dots their I’s to the left, and the other to the right. Melissa Taylor, the NIST human factors expert who led the group of authors, said that the report provides the forensic handwriting community with a road map for staying relevant. But the threat of irrelevance doesn’t come only from the decline in handwriting. Part of the challenge, she says, arises from the field of forensic science itself.

The field of forensic handwriting examination may have trouble attracting new blood. A report from NIST earlier this year found that the median age for handwriting examiners is 60, compared with 42 to 44 for people in similar scientific and technical occupations. That report, Forensic Handwriting Examination and Human Factors: Improving the Practice Through a Systems Approach, was published by NIST, but was written by 23 outside experts, including Will.To do so, it is useful to first annotate the evidence, identifying any words or phrases to zoom in on and/or thinking about whether or not the evidence links to the sociohistorical context. Doing such a process can also help them identify the sorts of quotations that facilitate rich, in-depth analysis. This GCSE supplement is placed at this point in the scheme of work as, by now, students have studied four of the seven main characters: Gerald Croft, Mr Birling, Mrs Birling, and Sheila Birling. We recommend that for this task students do not write about Priestley’s presentation of Mr Birling because students will be rearranging and dissecting a model paragraph for Mr Birling in Step Five of the writing process, as outlined above.

Thakkar. Expert Syst. Appl. 124, 282–308 (2019) Do the lines flow or are they shaky and irregular? This can indicate the speed of the writing. Prolonged writing can hint at someone copying the handwriting of another or trying to alter their own in some other way. 2. Word and letter spacing The importance of handwriting identification was emphasized by the century-heritage dispute case between “the first rich woman” Nina Wang and her father-in-law Wang Din-shin in Hong Kong, which took 8 years and costed hundreds of millions. The focus of the case was on the authenticity of Teddy Wang's signature in the will before and after. Nina Wang finally won the case, but the judgment was not based on handwriting identification opinions. The court held that the authenticity of Teddy Wang's signature was difficult to identify and handwriting experts on both the sides could not make any overwhelming conclusion. Finally, the judge made a decision based on the burden of proof and environmental testimony in common law.[ 1]

Melissa Taylor, the NIST expert, agrees that handwriting examination is still a needed skill and will remain relevant — if the field successfully adapts to changing expectations around research and reliability. And if the new report, which counts many leading handwriting experts among its authors, is any indication, the needed changes may already be underway. Does the writer lift the pen from the paper or is the writing continuous? Excessive pen lifts can hint at simulation — someone deliberately altering their natural handwriting or copying that of another. 5. Connecting strokes In the analysis processit is essential for the professional graphologist to look for a few minutes and feel what each letter conveys. We’ll see at a glance if the letters are legible, what the layout is, if are any mistakes, erasures, corrections, and if there is text-signature agreement. We perform what is called overview or a gestalt look at the spelling. This provides valuable information about whether someone’s handwriting is harmonious or if there are important disproportions.

When choosing an expert – ask them about their training, whether they work to accredited procedures, if their work is peer reviewed and whether they will attend Court if necessary. Next, have students move into groups of 3–4 based on their character. You might have more than one group with the same character. Invite them to share ideas from their journals, adding any new ideas about their characters to their journal responses. There is a big push toward greater reliability and more rigorous research in forensic science,” said Taylor, whose research is aimed at reducing errors and improving job performance in handwriting examination and other forensic disciplines, including fingerprints and DNA. “To stay relevant, the field of handwriting examination will have to change with the times.” Where are the crosses on t’s and dots on i’s? Are the t’s crossed? Is the cross on the t at the top, middle or bottom of the letter? Are the I’s dotted? If so, are they dotted to the left, the centre, or the right of the I? This Handwriting Analysis Chart include characteristics, aspects and traits in handwriting that will help you through the analysis process.

Is this evidence relevant to the sociohistorical context of the play, either when the play was set (1912) or when the play was written and first performed (1945)? If so, how? Handwriting experts are trained to compare a piece of questioned handwriting or a questioned signature with a set of specimen samples, with a view to giving an opinion on who may have written a piece of writing in question or signed a questioned document.
