About this deal

Today, many of the rooms are still filled with original furniture and works of art, while the planting in the grounds is to Albert’s designs.

In the Victorian era, swimming in the sea was a new thing and something in which women rarely indulged. When Queen Victoria needed to entertain large numbers of people this had to be confined mainly to the summer months, when marquees could be erected on the lawns. We will look at how traditional African art uses patterns and colour inspired by the landscape and produce some of our own African inspired pieces. Osborne was the private property of the royal family but Victoria’s successor, Edward VII (1841–1910), did not need it.

Then, once dry, we had to use masking tape to create a pattern on our concrete pots before painting them. Dance will be on a Thursday afternoon and we will be focusing on developing co-ordination and rhythm.

In science, we will be looking at the topic of everyday materials where we will be investigating different properties and using this to help us decide what materials we should use to make a suitable WWII shelter. Sometimes it is towards the ocean - smiling with countless dimples, speckled with white sails, with a hundred bathing-machines kissing the skirt of his blue garment - that the Londoner looks enraptured (. At the height of their popularity, bathing machines were dotted across beaches in Britain, France, Germany, the United States and Mexico, and were used by everyone from ordinary beach-goers to Queen Victoria herself. Even when early forms of swimwear did start being introduced, society conveniently decided that a 'proper woman' should not be seen on the beach in her bathing suit. Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 saw a significant upsurge in visitors and many rooms were redecorated. Dodgeball will be on a Tuesday morning and we will be focusing on developing our throwing techniques as well as our attack and defence strategies.

We have also begun to look at rhyme, firstly we identified rhyming pairs within the text then used them to create rhyming sentences. In 1853–4 a timber Swiss Cottage was built for the royal children in their own garden nearly a mile to the east of the house. But fashions changed and it was considered healthy to immerse oneself in salt water — or at least get a bit wet. We have been recapping our number bonds to ten and using the knowledge of these to work out simple addition and subtraction sums e. We have been telling the time to the nearest five minutes as well as reading scales to tell an amount. We focused particularly on Queen Victoria's era, where we learnt that bathing machines were used to protect ladies modesty when getting changed and entering the sea because it was very rude for a lady to show anything apart from her hands, feet or face in front of men.

It could only be entered through a step ladder, and normally contained a bench and a lined container for wet clothes. Among all of the strange contraptions that the Victorians invented, bathing machines are amongst the most bizarre. To ensure we have a good understanding of weight we are reading a variety of scales (horizontal, vertical and circular). At present the upstairs of Swiss Cottage and the play area nearby are closed for conservation and maintenance. Some machines were equipped with a canvas tent lowered from the seaside door, sometimes capable of being lowered to the water, giving the bather greater privacy.
