About this deal

After using the XPS 13 2-in-1 every day for a week, I found that everything feels quite well-engineered. The 2.9-pound weight is on the heavy side for an ultraportable, but the body feels solid, not awkward and bulky. You need only one hand to open the display lid; on many laptops, you need two to pry open the stiff hinges. Whether you're tapping on the touch screen or on the very comfortable touchpad, the laptop responds instantly. The screen bounces very little, and the touchpad doesn't suffer from the sluggishness or cheap-feeling hinges that are common on many Windows laptops.

The XPS 13 7390 excels in all the usual areas including display, performance and, of course, its design. That said, we cannot recommend purchasing this particular model. In particular, its entire reason for being lies with the inclusion of a 10th-gen Intel CPU, but it’s barely an improvement of the 8th-gen chip fitted into the early 2019 edition. This laptop’s 1 TB SSD copied 4.97 GB of mixed media files in 6 seconds at a rate of 732 MBps. Its transfer rate is much faster than the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1’s 463 MBps file copy rate. The following list of Dell XPS desktop computers has beentested for upgrade to Windows11. If your computer model is not listed, Dell will not test the device, and drivers will not be updated for that model. When subjected to 100 percent utilization (Prime95+FurMark), consumption spikes to about 49 W yet again from the very small (~6.0 x 5.5 x 2.3 cm) 45 AC adapter. This eventually drops to about 37 W after the first minute or so due to thermal limits as exemplified by the very high core temperatures in our Stress Test section above.

The best, perfected

Our XPS 13 2-in-1 review unit features a screen with 500 nits of brightness and a native resolution of 1,920 by 1,200 pixels, which is a bit higher than full HD (1,920 by 1,080 pixels) because of the laptop's unique 16:10 aspect ratio. Picture quality seems better than most other full HD screens I've used, with more-vivid colors and a rated 1,800:1 contrast ratio. Hard drive retention: Hard drive retention is not available on models with a soldered hard drive, including XPS 9315 2in1, Chromebooks or Venue tablets, except the Venue 11 Pro. Dell’s XPS 13 9300 gives you Intel’s most advanced CPU in a traditional clamshell. Which XPS 13 should you buy? Unlike the classic platinum-silver and dark grey color combination on the Dell XPS 15 7590, the XPS 13 7390 offers another option. You can also buy the Dell XPS 13 7390 that sports the winter white color theme.

Similarly, the digital content creation results of the two laptops were widely far apart. The Dell XPS 13 7390 scored a meager 3671 points compared to the Dell XPS 15 7590’s 6110 points. Even more impressive though is the comparison between the fastest 8th-gen Whiskey Lake and the new 10th-gen Comet Lake chip. As both are the same essential cores, the 44-percent bump is simply phenomenal. Gordon Mah Ung This laptop maintains the XPS 13’s smooth aluminum build. As a result, it still has an elegant appearance. For a closer look at intensive computing tasks, we use multimedia benchmarks that both Windows and macOS can run. Whether it's rendering a 3D image in Maxon Cinebench, encoding a video using Handbrake, or applying a series of filters and effects to an image in Adobe Photoshop, the XPS 13 2-in-1 offers consistently excellent performance, though it's not the fastest in every case.Graphics rendering is one area where the XPS 13 2-in-1 is unquestionably the fastest in this test group. Our 3DMark and Superposition results show just how much better the Iris Plus graphics system is compared with the UHD Graphics silicon that is part of most previous-generation Intel mobile CPUs. With a lifespan of 7hrs 22mins, however, just under a full working day, the 4K-fitted late 2019 XPS 13 registers a result that’s decent in its own right, but weak by Dell’s usual standards. This suggests the tradeoff between display quality and battery life is as alive as ever. In my opinion, the color difference is the right design choice. After all, both logos beautifully contrast the colors of the lids that house them.

As a result of its incredible CPU performance, the Dell XPS 13 7390 scores an eight in this review. Dell XPS 13 7390 Memory (RAM) Performance ReviewTurn both laptops upside down and you will get a better view of their bottom-firing speakers. Despite the positioning of their speakers, both laptops still offered loud and clear audio. Despite their big sizes, the keys on the Dell XPS 13 7390 are well spaced. Similarly, the keys on the Dell XPS 15 7590 have enough spacing between them. In general, typing on both keyboards was incredibly comfortable. Despite the Dell XPS 15 7590’s 1.1 mm shallow key travel, I still had a wonderful typing experience.

There are a few minor gripes, however, namely with regards to the positioning of the PgUp and PgDn keys. These are, as per usual, fitted above the half-height left and right arrow keys, which leads to frequent mis-taps. All keys, and the carbon fibre palm rest, are also susceptible to gathering marks and smudges, so regular wipe-downs will be necessary. Dell XPS 13 7390 (late 2019) review: Specs and Performance Meanwhile, the Dell XPS 15 7590 achieved an impressive 28,882 score, completely surpassing the Dell XPS 13 7390. Beyond just raw performance, Ice Lake also introduces AI acceleration and Deep Learning Boost not found on any previous generation Core U series CPU or even the latest 2nd generation AMD Zen+ series. Nonetheless. the practicality of this feature has yet to be fully explored in Windows to really impact any day-to-day usage scenarios.

Best business laptops 2023: Top business notebooks from Acer, Asus, Dell, Apple and more Dell XPS 13 (New 9300) hands-on review: Chasing perfection Is the humble phone call dying? Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 13in review: Almost the perfect laptop In terms of its design, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate the Dell XPS 13 7390 from its predecessors. The design of this laptop is almost entirely the same as its previous model. The small difference is also a major contributing factor to why we aren't giving the XPS 13 five stars this time. It's still superb, but unless you actually need the extra processing oomph that the Comet Lake processor in our test unit offers (and most everyday users do not), the clamshell XPS 13 isn't unquestionably better than its more physically versatile 2-in-1 cousin for every buyer. Going by its specification, this laptop ought to deliver a satisfactory performance. It should be almost as powerful as some desktops. Dell XPS 13 7390 Design, Dimension & Weight Review By way of comparison, the late 2019 XPS 13 lasts a few minutes shy of the 7hrs 37mins registered by the Lenovo Thinkpad x390, and more than an hour shorter than the 8hrs 48mins of the Surface Laptop 3. Neither, however, are fitted with 4K displays. Dell XPS 13 7390 (late 2019) review: Ports and Features
