About this deal

If you've been unfortunate enough to buy a bag of Optimum Health's Ultimate Whey, you'll find Xtra Whey tastes like the less-sweet version of that. There's no power or effort in the flavour – it just seems as though XL Nutrition have given the whey powder just enough flavour and enough colour to not make it look or taste too unpleasant. Whilst Xtra Whey isn't the worst whey supplement for sugar (see Ultimate Whey for more information on that), it could do better nutritionally – a lot better. Taste. ( 2.1) - ( 12/16)

The other big added benefit of whey protein shakes is that you're able to take in fewer calories for every 1g of protein you consume. This is handy if you're trying to limit the number of calories in your daily diet. Supplements are certainly no replacement for actual food, but if you're watching the calories (and assuming you already have a nice, balanced diet) you're better off getting those extra grams of protein from whey protein shakes than pints of milk. Yes, because with whey protein you ideally want to get as much protein for as few calories as possible. If a powder has a lot of calories, it probably contains a bunch of extra stuff in it (e.g. extra carbs/sugars) that you don't want. No, because whey protein powders are very similar these days. I wouldn't worry if one shake has an extra 10kcal or so than another. The difference is negligible.

Recommended Use

Optimum Nutrition uses only the finest, high-quality, raw ingredients in each of their products, and each is rigorously tested in their manufacturing plant in Middlesbrough, UK, to ensure they meet the highest standards of ON's sports nutrition products. Alongside their popular, The Purge pre-workout powder, which offers extreme energy and focus, comes their Xtra Whey, perfect for building muscle mass and enhancing that all-important recovery time.

Price – we will go into more detail on price in a short while, but we just want to touch upon how price can impact quality here. As the old saying goes “you get what you pay for”, does have a certain sense of truth to it and should at least have some influence on your expectations of quality when you have set yourself a budget. If your budget is right at the lower end of the scale for buying XL Nutrition then you should have expectations that you perhaps won’t be getting the best quality product available.

The other thing to consider with brands is your personal preference. Now we of course can’t influence this, but can at least advise you to have a good think about the sort of brands that you’d be comfortable buying. When shopping with retailers like Discount Supplements you can often filter by brands, which is a really useful way to narrow down your search, especially when you’re dealing with 5 products in the XL Nutrition category. The sole purpose of whey protein powder is to help the user gain muscle mass whilst aiding muscle repair during training. However, whey protein can also be a great supplement for those who struggle to get enough protein into their diets. What are the best whey protein brands?

Browse the collection at Discount Supplements and find a selection of tub sizes, bundles and sachets in various flavours to try this award-winning brand for yourself. 2. Efectiv Nutrition It's bland and pastey. I don't drink muddy water, but if I did I bet it would taste (and look) a lot like the chocolate flavour of Xtra Whey. Containing over 23g of the purest protein per scoop, it's never been easier to up that protein intake! 5. CNP NutritionDo not replace actual food with whey protein shakes. Just because it delivers the fewest calories per 1g of protein it doesn't mean you can throw proper food out of the window. That would be horrendous, as whey protein does not have all the essential nutrients that proper meat and vegetables will give you. Whey protein powder is called a supplement – and not a replacement – for a reason. Useful links. Each serving of XL Nutrition's Xtra Whey contains 21 grams of protein per serving and just 119 calories. High-quality ingredients that are great tasting, Xtra Whey comes in a selection of tasty flavours, including Caramel Toffee Popcorn, Banana and Chocolate Mint! Further reading: if you have time this article on ‘5 ways product quality impacts your brand’ is worth a read. It’s directed at the business rather than us as consumers but gives food for thought on things to consider when buying online. Xtra Whey is obviously aiming to be a cheap and cheerful whey protein supplement that doesn't do anything fancy, but gets the job done at a low price. Unfortunately however for XL Nutrition, it falls short of the top spot in this area thanks to the impressive Impact Whey Protein from MyProtein. Anything on or over 80g of protein for every 100g of powder is impressive. Ideal serving size in grams of protein.

Here's a table that highlights how many calories come with every 1g of protein you get from different whole foods. Material – is there anything about the product material that you know makes it a better material than that of perhaps cheap entry level XL Nutrition Impact Whey Protein is higher quality, better tasting and better value for money than XL Nutrition's Xtra Whey. Impact Whey just blows it out of the shaker and beats it in every aspect worth comparing.Nutritional values are per 100g for each food. Information taken from http://nutritiondata.self.com Food
