About this deal

It is the first and most well-known of Durrell's Corfu Trilogy, together with Birds, Beasts, and Relatives (1969) and The Garden of the Gods (1978).

Gerald Durrell was the fifth and final child of the Durrell family (an older sister died in infancy). In Nanny Ogg's Cookbook by Terry Pratchett, there is reference to a fictional book titled My Family and Other Werewolves. Despite the omissions and inaccuracies, Lawrence Durrell commented: "This is a very wicked, very funny, and I'm afraid rather truthful book – the best argument I know for keeping thirteen-year-olds at boarding-schools and not letting them hang about the house listening in to conversations of their elders and betters". Gerald's moral as well as more conventional education is put in the hands of three very different young men, two of whom are more distracted by Margot's flirtatiousness than by Gerald's zoological enthusiasm. The acting is very fitting to the surroundings, Hannah Gordon is serene as the mother, and credit to Brian Blessed, he's still the Brian Blessed we all know (and love) but fittingly he is not as bombastic as usual. Gerry begins spending every Thursday afternoon at Theodore's house, poring over microscope slides and consulting books.

Instead she discovered a prowess for horse riding, and discovered her inherent competitive streak which is a delight to read of. Their unusual upbringing includes receiving a pony from the queen, knowing that the horses come first with their father, and thinking that the seasons are flat racing and jumping rather than spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I should probably preface this review in saying that I have absolutely no interest in sport and most certainly not for horse racing, the decision to read this book was made purely out of fascination and intrigue yet it becomes the first biography I have chosen to review here, to receive five stars.

Finally, Durrell's novel can also be seen as sharing broad thematic similarities with Henry David Thoreau's Walden, as all promote a sense of reverence and respect for the natural world.

He insists that Gerry lock them up, so Gerry asks Kralefsky to help him build a cage and at the same time, teach him to wrestle. I was busting out laughing constantly throughout the film; and I enjoyed it so much I watched it again the next day, still in awe of its perfection, and still constantly amused to the point of complete hilarity.

Things go wrong from the start: the now-captive Old Plop and the snakes eat Gerry's goldfish; the snakes get heatstroke and need to cool down in the bathtub; and the Magenpies and Alecko escape and wreak havoc. I’m certain this would not have fazed Gerry Durrell in the least; I, however, ceased my snooping for the day. Not only was it full of interesting facts about the animals he caught but also about the people in his life. When they were coming to England by train a ‘disgracefully efficient official’ at the Swiss frontier described them in a form: 'One travelling Circus and Staff'. A very enjoyable book,Clare Balding memoirs of growing up in the world of horse racing told with a great sense of humour .

Durrell, introducing your wildly entertaining family was the icing on the cake to this spectacular tale! At the London Olympics of 2012 she was proclaimed a “national treasure'” and acclaimed as the gold medal winning presenter of the Games. No words can express my love for this author and his immense sense of humor, pure and light, nothing topical or scathing beneath.Though he is initially extremely aggressive, he soon mellows and even decides that Roger is a fine companion. If you check the Goodreads shelves of these three exceptional ladies – which I strongly recommend - the first thing you will probably notice is the diversity of their literary tastes. She became the face of the BBC’s horse racing coverage in 1998, and now works across a wide range of sports for television and radio. The family packs their most precious belongings— Gerry brings his scientific equipment and the family dog, Roger; Margo brings her acne potions; Leslie brings his guns; and Larry brings books—and they arrive in Greece not long after. Imelda Staunton will throw you with how funny she is; the other actors/characters, especially Gerry's literary brother Larry, are equally as hilarious.
