About this deal

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus was launched in the US, UK and Australia in March 2020. There are two variants of the phone; one with 5G, and another with only 4G. Display Size: Measured diagonally, Galaxy S20 FE's screen size is 6.5" in the full rectangle and 6.3" with accounting for the rounded corners; actual viewable area is less due to the rounded corners and camera hole. With an elegant Triple Lens Camera design on the rear and sleek lines everywhere else, Galaxy S23 strikes the perfect balance between looks and smarts. This is the case with a lot of flagship phones now, and while it may disappoint some, the feature is less of a deal-breaker with more and more of us using wireless and true-wireless headphone and earbuds – and of course Samsung has you covered with its own Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Buds Plus.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition comes with Android 10 built in, though you can now update it to Android 12. Before the Galaxy S20 FE’s launch, Samsung promised that future phones would get at least three years of Android updates, so you’ll definitely get Android 13, and perhaps beyond. In other words, Samsung pitched this Plus model as more of an intermediate step than simply a larger version – which is a bit of a stretch. There aren’t that many more extras in the S20 Plus than there were in the S10 Plus that warrant the relative price jump… aside from 5G connectivity.

New ways to find balance for you and your family

A big upgrade for the Galaxy S20 is the maximum 120Hz refresh-rate display. This is double the rate at which the display refreshes on most phones, including previous Samsung devices, and what it means in practice is smoother scrolling and animations. This is particularly pertinent when you’re mobile gaming as it allows for a more immersive experience and could even give you the edge over an opponent, but it makes everyday things like scrolling through your social media feeds look smoother too. Take breathtaking images every time thanks to the triple rear camera set-up. Featuring three advanced lenses: 50MP Wide + Folded 48MP Tele + 48MP Ultra-Wide Main Camera. Snap a sharp selfie when you need it most using the 10.5MP front camera. Shoot high-quality scenes thanks to 4k and 60fps video shooting capabilities. However, pictures looked a touch candy-coloured for my liking, and the iPhone 11 did a better job at capturing more neutral-looking images. The S20 was also insistent on overexposing most images. The differences between the two are night and day as soon as the light begins to fade, too: the S20 looks drab when placed side-by-side with the positively vibrant images from the iPhone 11.

If you live in the US, you'll only be able to get a 5G variant unless you're willing to import the device. We've used the 5G variant for the purpose of this review, but if you wanted to opt for the cheaper 4G version (if it's available where you live) the specs are largely the same aside from connectivity. One notable omission is a 3.5mm headphone port. The Galaxy S20 is the first S-series flagship to ditch it – while this has become the norm on flagships from Apple and OnePlus, Samsung has been late to join that party. You do get an “okay” pair of AKG-branded USB-C buds in the box, and Samsung has recently updated its true wireless headphone offering with the Galaxy Buds Plus. We know an increase in screen size might be off-putting for some (there’s pent-up demand for smaller one-hand-friendly phones), and we have good news and bad news about that. First the good news: while the S20 is taller than the S10, it’s also a little narrower, with a 20:9 aspect ratio, and the screen is only marginally bigger. The camera is one the big focuses here. Even though it’s the Galaxy S20 Ultra that benefits from the fancy new additions (108-megapixel main sensor, 100x zoom, 40-megapixel selfie), the S20 offers a significant upgrade. I prefer the photos and shooting experience here anyway as S20 Ultra struggles with a load of focus issues. These were fixed on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The front-facing camera is a 32MP f/2.0 snapper, but note that if you take a regular selfie, you’re not getting a 32MP picture – that’s because this sensor is paired with a wide-angle lens. You’ll only get a high-res picture if you take a wider shot, while if it’s a close-up featuring just you, the photo will be automatically cropped.

Relive every night in perfect clarity with the Samsung Galaxy S23 pro-grade camera. This includes 12MP Dual Pixel Auto Focus Front-Facing Camera and triple-lens Rear Camera with a 50MP Wide lens for 4x wider dynamic range and 3x Optical Zoom to get you closer to the action without the noise.
