You still get a satisfying deep clean of the teeth and gums, but the feeling as the head moves over the teeth isn’t as intense. It’s like the dial for invigorating brushing has been turned down from 10 to 7. The slight harshness that has existed now doesn’t. The iO6-10 does allow the color to be changed via the in-handle display. But, you have fewer color choices than if you navigate to the app. There is some variance in the colors available One more question. Which one has softer brush heads? Maybe it doesn’t matter because it has the pressure sensor. The iO 7 comes with 5 available brushing modes. As we have said before, we aren’t a big fan of modes. We have found that the daily clean mode is pretty much all you need. If this brush causes some discomfort, we can see some value in having a sensitive mode, but remember that using this mode will also reduce the cleaning power. Turn the iO7 on and the timer and pacer are activated. At 30 second intervals, the motor will momentarily pause. The sound and brushing sensation subsequently change. This is your cue to move to a new section of the mouth. This repeats 3 times. When 3 pauses of the motor occur, you’ve achieved the recommended minimum 2 minutes of brushing.
When you begin the coaching app, it shows a 3-D model of your teeth all colored blue. And as you brush each section of your mouth, the teeth will turn white showing you that they are clean with a sparkling animation. The Series 8 has 6 cleaning modes (daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, whitening & gum care) compared to the 7 of the Series 9 (daily clean, sensitive, intense, whitening, gum care & tongue clean). The extra mode the iO9 has is tongue clean. Dentists recommend replacing your brush head every 3 months or sooner if it becomes worn for an optimal clean. A little louder than some other newer iO handles like the 4,5 and 6. Yet a bit quieter than most other Oral-B brushes nonetheless. While this is not a touch screen, so it isn’t as useful as the one built into the Oclean X Pro that we tested, this screen does offer some nice features. Using the intense mode won’t necessarily remove more plaque from the teeth and gumline. You don’t need a whitening mode to make your teeth whiter — the daily clean mode can achieve this.
