About this deal

So far in DR 15.2 update we can now use our number keys to do actions on the timeline, plus the visualisation of how they are mapped! Big kudos to Davinci Resolve team. The venerable Avid Media Composer recently updated to version 2022.7. This in and of itself might not be big news and I don’t always cover every NLE release as there are so many of them (and it depends on what I’m working in at the time TBH). But this Media Composer release had one addition that I thought was quite surprising. I have always thought that this keyboard layout was a thing of beauty. It was well thought out with what an editor has to do for much of an editing job which is watching media, making edits and then finessing the story. It was designed with two hands on the keyboard, the right doing a lot of playing of media with the JKL keys and the left marking and modifying IN and OUT points. I’ve always found this base idea to be the best for craft/creative editorial so I’ve made it my base keyboard layout as best I can in other NLEs. This was outlined years ago in my Keyboard Manifesto.

A shortcut/a new function for searching for clip on the timeline would be nice. Also another shortcut for the search function in the bin & one can start typing to search right away. You’ll want to use “Menu to Button” Reassignment if you want to attach a menu item to a certain key or shortcut, such as control panel windows. I end up basically working 60% keyboard, 40% tablet (or mouse) and have pretty much swapped half of the keys around, so it's currently looking a little like this: Is there a bit of a delay when you execute something like these trims? Maybe a minuscule one but it’s quite small. No more than other hardware surfaces like a Contour Shuttle Pro. It may be fractionally slower than executing something in Premiere Pro but it’s almost unnoticeable. It works very well.

Function Keys

Cycle Through Edit Modes: [`] Key (known as the "Single Open Quote" key, located directly above the Tab key) Overall since Resolve uses a similar mode-based way of working as Avid does it might be an easier keyboard adaptation. I’ll have to use it more to make a judgment. Another thing, I wonder if the official release of Davinci 15 enables having two shortcuts doing the same tasks in one tab? (for example number 4 and Right Arrow can both do Step One Frame Forward in the tab Edit).

Peter Chamberlain wrote:We currently have no plans to alter the single key number selection to be anything other than timecode or frame entry. With many different keyboard types and many laptop users who need those for timecode its not high on our list to review. Also, I couldn't find a way to set the keyboard shortcut for the Auto Align Clips by Waveform on the Timeline. Hope it is included in the next update. Funny, I have had the exact same experience coming from AVID to Resolve as an editor. This particular command was part of the reason you can cut so fast on AVID. You can get a similar result in Resolve using the copy and paste command and then trim the pasted clip in the timeline. I have not found a way to load into the source monitor with the copy command. Whatever the reason, Avid makes it easy to swap and customize your keyboard shortcuts and hot keys. Just follow these simple steps: Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you may vary.

Now we’ll dive into more complex keyboard shortcuts that will allow you to access a wide range of features and tools. The first thing is the addition of the dials. There are certain edit tasks that lend themselves to rotating a dial and it’s a real joy.

There are lots of different shortcut combinations that work with Avid, and you can even create your own shortcuts to customize your editing workflow (more on that later). These single key commands are often called “hotkeys” and are typically assigned due to their frequency of use. That doesn’t reduce or enlarge the zoom level of the timeline but rather zooms in or out on the image in the Record window. That’s for sure useful when you’re working on positioning a graphic or drawing a matte but I don’t think that’s the behavior a PPro editor is going to expect. Zooming the timeline is still CMD+[ and ] (CTRL on a PC I think) as it always has been by default. These new to Avid keyboard layouts aren’t the only new features in this update to Media Composer, it’s just the ones that caught my eye. There are a lot of bug fixes.Again, you’ll get out of it what you put into it. Yea but what about all those other tools Avid editor use? Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food, flowers, newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases.

Making mistakes costs time as well, so learning how to make precise, error-free edits and modifications is a skill that many sound editors will spend their entire career honing. Speed, however, is a much easier skill to master, and largely comes down to how well you know your tools. Being a successful professional audio editor or producer requires both precision and speed. The longer it takes to complete a project, the less projects you complete. If it lets you work faster and becomes your baby, then keep changing your keyboard until you feel happy with it. Also if another editor comes to use you keyboard and says "WTF!?!?" you know you're doing something right :)

Hello, I'm not sure this should be a feature request or a bug, but on the Edit tab, everytime I type in a number on a top row of my keyboard, it doesn't do the function that I assigned in the keyboard mapping settings, instead Davinci Resolve always use those key for typing timecode input. I had seen it from Davinci Resolve 14 and now 15, hopefully will be resolved in the official released, as I see keyboard mapping is listed to be improved in the next releases. The keys to being a successful professional editor come down to two things: precision and speed. Precision is a skill honed over time, with hundreds of hours of practice and experience finding the perfect way to cut and combine clips to tell a story. Speed comes down to how well you know your tools. Step 5: Drag and drop the selected action to whatever key you’d like to assign it to in the Command Pallete keyboard. If you’re doing a lot of editing, these will be the keys with the most wear and tear. Now, let’s get into some more complex shortcut combinations for different uses. I believe it can be. Adjusting audio gain via a dial and not a keyboard combo is very fast considering you often have to implement the key combo multiple times as you change an audio level. A twist of a dial is a very natural way to do this and it beats mousing it with the Audio Mixer by a mile.
