About this deal

She has her own reasons for keeping her identity safe. If people find out, more secrets may surface. And can any high schooler really stand to have the rest of the school know their secret? Positives MR. PERFECT ON PAPER is a charming tale of finding love where you least expect it. While a romance, it's also a glimpse into the lives of people who are struggling but keep their problems private."

I shook my head and laughed a little too loudly. “No.” The heat in my cheeks told me my face was betraying me. Perhaps the most endearing part of the story is just how real Darcy is - she is a girl who could be your classmate, your neighbor, your friend. Darcy struggles with her identity in a variety of ways - from questioning what it means to her and the world to be bisexual to having friendship issues - which makes her relatable on different levels. We see Darcy struggle with different relationships throughout the book, and Brougham becomes a delightful foil who seems to play devil’s advocate about every little thing at first. Watching the two of them get to know each other over the course of the book was so satisfying, sort of an homage to finding that person who surprises you more than anyone else and then actually begins to understand you in ways others don’t. I can’t get over how much I loved this book. The representation was abundant, and not in a forced, overbearing kind of way. Just some rep examples throughout this book: ace, bi, transgender, gay, lesbian, non-binary.

If you couldn’t tell, I really loved this book. I cannot say enough good things about it. I can’t wait until it releases so I can get my physical copy. I know this will be a book I reread anytime I need a happy read. I encourage everyone to read Perfect on Paper! With plenty of swoons and off-the-charts chemistry, Sophie Gonzales has delivered a rom-com that is the perfect blend of humor, heart, and truth. Perfect on Paper is a must read for all rom-com fans!” —Kevin van Whye, author of Date Me, Bryson Keller Well, wasn’t this guy dramatic? “Um, look, I’m sorry, but I don’t really have time to be anyone’s coach. I just do this before bed as a hobby.” Perfect on Paper was smart, thoughtful, funny, and everything I love about YA and more. This is my first book by Sophie Gonzales and I loved the writing style and humor. I thought the author also did a fantastic job with representation and diversity. The relationship advice and love tutor/coach premise has been attempted in books before, but Gonzales put such a fresh spin on it that it felt very new and exciting. The characters and situations were layered and complex, and were laid out in such an honest and relatable way. This book had no right to be as good as it was. Not only did it start off extremely problematic but it ventured into resolving the difficult situation and deal with it in a very interesting way. A lot of teenagers don't want to confide in adults so having someone like Darcy was a great idea. There are of course different issues to think about i.e. qualifications, legal aspect however I found that the school itself *spoiler alert* was disgusting in dealing with the fall out by only focusing on the school's reputation. Absolutely disgusting and far too realistic. There were multiple times when just reading Darcy's thoughts made me burst into tears out of recognition. I genuinely don't think I've read anything that explains internalised biphobia as well as this book did- some of the conversation was putting to words feelings I have never even managed to give coherent thoughts to.

I loved the relationship Darcy had with her sister Ainsley. I liked how it wasn’t made into a big deal that Ainsley was transgender because it just wasn’t a big deal. Ainsley’s family was loving and accepting and nothing more needed to be said. Perfect on Paper" is indeed perfect for anyone who likes strong female characters, slow burn romances, and dialogue that is laugh-out-loud funny. Okay, I don’t mean literally. Lots of people know who I am. Darcy Phillips. Junior. That girl with the shoulder-length blond hair and the gap between her front teeth. The one who’s best friends with Brooke Nguyen, and is part of the school’s queer club. Ms. Morgan-from-science-class’s daughter.

VAMPIRE MOVIES ON THE MOVIE SCENE

I feel like I could write an entire love letter to this book and it still wouldn’t be enough. Was this book perfect? Not necessarily. But did it perfectly pair some of my favorite things together? Absolutely. Now, if you know me even the slightest bit, you know that I live for witty banter. Let me tell you, this book had that in spades. Darcy and Brougham have some of the funniest, most entertaining banter I’ve ever read. And that’s saying a lot coming from me. Just saying. Well, I’d committed to this enough to shove them down my tights so I might as well follow this through to the end, right? I held my empty hands out, palms up. “I don’t have any letters.”

I’m definitely going to be thinking about this book for a while and recommending it to every single person I know. I loved Only Mostly Devastated, and I loved this one even more, so I can’t wait for Sophie’s next one. This book was so original and creative--I absolutely loved the premise. I loved all the characters, too. They, of course, had their flaws and secrets, but the author did such a great job of showing you their motivations and reasons, you still loved them. It would be remiss to not point out the great bisexual representation we get in Darcy, as well, who has some very real conversations surrounding sexuality that are perfect for YA audiences.

Everyone needs to go and buy this book RIGHT NOW. If you’re on a budget, then you need to go and request it from your library. You need to get your hands on this book ASAP. Meet Perfect on Paper, one of, in my opinion, the best books of 2021 and a new personal favorite book of mine. The was a particular scene in the Q&Q club that actually had me crying because I was just so happy and overwhelmed with how an issue was dealt with. This story is truly out here to represent Bi- people. The rep didn't end there though which I greatly appreciated. From the author of The Matzah Ball comes a pitch-perfect romcom following a third-generation Jewish matchmaker who unwittingly finds her own search for love thrust into the spotlight... I knew him. Or, at least, I knew of him. His name was Alexander Brougham, although I was pretty sure he usually went by Brougham. He was a senior, and good friends with Finn Park, and, by all accounts, one of the hottest seniors at St. Deodetus’s. One thing I really loved about the book is that it made me pause and reflect on my own relationships and also the relationships I want to have. It made me think about and recognize the power and consequences of my own behavior and choice of words. I can't wait to read more from this author and Perfect on Paper is definitely a book not to be missed!
