About this deal

These measurements exclude the ties and the ruffled edge. STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US CROCHET TERMS)

Sew the brim to the cap with a 5/8ths inch seam allowance. Sew with the brim side down so the feed dogs don’t mess up the gathers as you sew. I then went looking for a cheap straw hat to make the bonnet. Finally, I found a suitable one at the Recycling centre but don’t tell anyone that it is not real straw! Anyway, there are several good tutorials on how to turn a modern straw hat into a Regency/Empire/Victorian bonnet:

YARN USED

When selecting the yarn for a baby bonnet, choose soft and gentle materials on the baby's skin. Natural fibers such as cotton or wool are best, so reading the label before buying is essential. bonnets: close round the face in a ‘horseshoe’-shape; from the side view a long, rather straight bonnet shape; ‘coal scuttle bonnet’ ( original 1840s bonnet); sometimes the brim and crown piece are still constructed of two pieces ( 1840s bonnet) Fold the 3.5″x20″ strip of fabric in half lengthwise (so it is long and skinny) with the right sides together, and pin it in place. After sewing both side edges, do the same to the bottom edge to finish it off. Step 8. Attach The Elastic When you are done gathering, tie the two threads in a knot, and do the same with the other side so it doesn’t ungather as you sew it.

Turn the brim right side out, and take a minute to press it flat and make it look crisp and neat. Then, you can set it aside for now. Step 5. Gather The Bonnet Cap I decided to work the bonnet up in two colours – Mint Green and Candyfloss Pink. Both these colours are light, summery pastel shades. I think that they suit the design of the hat very well.Rows 1 – 7. Ch2 (does not count as your first dc), 1dc in same st, 1dc in next 46 sts, TURN [47 sts]. Next, gather the basting stitch by pulling on one of the threads on one side. Continue pulling the thread to gather the fabric, and gently push the gathers around the cap so it is evenly gathered all around. Then, trim off the corner a bit to get rid of the excess fabric near the seam as in the photo below. Don’t cut too close to the stitch line. This bonnet is an excellent base pattern, you can add ruffles, bows, lace, whatever you want! It is easy to put together for only a few dollars so you can match your pioneer skirt and apron! If you're a beginner, knitting a hat is a good way to learn a few new skills in a manageable way. Hats are generally small projects, and when you combine that with bulky yarn, you have something you can knit in a few evenings...or less!

Finally, I threaded a strong silk buttonhole thread through the channel and used that to pull the cord through. This also meant that I could only break my thread after the cord finished the channel end which meant that the end didn’t have any annoying holes. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the starting end where the fabric ripped a bit. To cover the ugly holes, I embroidered little stars/flowers on top of the holes. If your strips for the cap frill aren’t long enough, join them with small French seams after hemming. Feathers, of the lightest and most elegant kinds, will be more in vogue for trimmings than flowers. Velvet panachees will be the favourite flowers. Drawn bonnets of velvet will be very fashionable. A new style of trimming, composed of noeuds of shaded velvet ribbon and blonde lace, will be in vogue.’ ( The Illustrated London News, 1844)
