I like the original bumbu, this has a few similar characteristics but is more straightforward and honest than its spiced flagship sister. The rum itself is quite good and not overly sweet (thanks to that lack of additional sugar), with big oak, vanilla, and tropical fruit notes.

The aging also enhances the smoothness and depth of the taste, making xo rum an excellent choice for sipping neat. XO rum is perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks, or can be used to make exquisite cocktails that will impress any guest. I almost liked the Original Bumbu rum, but for me it had far too much banana, so I only gave that a 3.Brugal is another Dominican rum, and its core 1888 expression is double aged in both bourbon and sherry casks (kind of like many single malt whiskies) to develop its flavors. Renegade, founded by Waterford Whisky’s Mark Reynier, makes rum in the style of rhum agricole by using sugarcane juice instead of molasses. The resulting drink had an excellent balance of sweet and sour with a creamy texture and just hints of spices.

Xo rum is an excellent choice for a special occasion or when you want to enjoy a high-quality rum experience. In reality, Xo actually has a long and interesting history which almost certainly adds an additional layer of complexity to your favorite sipping spirit. As permitted by Venezuelan law, there is some sugar added to the rum during aging, but the sweetness complements a palate full of banana, oak, and vanilla.

This Nicaraguan rum distillery has made sustainability a main focus, in addition to producing tasty rum that has no sugar or artificial ingredients added. On the palate, salted caramel gives the rum a candylike note, though this gives way in time to notes of black pepper and green beans. Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand, takes a cue from his native France for his Plantation Rum brand.

The classic Imperial Premium Blend was released as a 40th anniversary special edition earlier this year, a blend of reserve rum aged in French and American oak toasted to different levels resulting in a wonderful sipping spirit.
