For the last couple of weeks I have had the pleasure of reading, Wave Me Goodbye by Jacqueline Wilson. Wilson is still a force to be reckoned with, and an author I'd wholeheartedly recommend to young readers. A lot of families would already have felt the pinch and obviously might have taken this feeling out on the children in their care.

Not only this, but the way the emotion has been captured and written to perfection enhances the quality of the picture you get in your head when reading. Eventually, Shirley and both boys are reluctantly taken in by two older women who live in a rundown house on the outskirts of the village. Beginning in 1941, the series tells the story of David Stirling, an eccentric young officer who finds himself hospitalised in Cairo after a training exercise goes wrong. The book was a very detailed and accurate first-person account of the Second World War, all the way down to the clothes the characters wore. She usually wears a pleated grey skirt with a white bodice under a cream fairisle jumper, white socks and red patent shoes.
