About this deal

It reminds us, reminded me, that it's not my fault I'm in pain and that it isn't something I've made up either - rather that it's a genuine condition that doesn't mean I'm broken but is simply an 'injury' itself that can be overcome. With wonderful artwork, cat and mouse metaphors, essential scientific facts, and a healthy dose of wit, the narrator reveals how trauma resolution involves changing the body's physiology and describes techniques that can achieve this, including Trauma Releasing Exercises that allow the body to shake away tension, safely releasing deep muscular patterns of stress and trauma. One of the core themes is that being aware of habitual survival gestures can help us become more resilient. His treatments use movement, education, embodied awareness, and slow touch to help people move more freely and be more present. My worldview has been deeply informed by the AIDs epidemic and the activism that emerged in the 80’s and 90’s and continues to this day. Every permutation of trauma, from "mere" overwhelm to single-event disaster, to complex and developmental trauma, is addressed. Appreciating the hidden stories and protective reflexes working hard to protect you can transformative for many people. I appreciate it must be tricky getting complex ideas across effectively in this way, but I still think some of the language was overcomplicated and could've been simplified further.

By the end, it makes it sound like we’re all built to overcome trauma and we’re not trying hard enough if we fail to overcome it. Also, I felt a little stressed at trauma being defined as 'that which overwhelms' since I am overwhelmed much of the time, and so dissociation is a part of my life and not something I am ever in permanent recovery from.
