About this deal

If there was more cards included, then I think Top of the Pops would’ve made it into my hall of fame, but I am left wanting an expansion for a bevy of new cards to add in. Instead, it’s silly fun: singing a song or attempting to Kazoo it with your teammates dumbfounded as to what the tune you’re “perfectly” playing is.

Still, most will get an exhilaration from being part of it all, especially when their team manages to get all three of their artists cards in a round – cue cheering and applause. This is not only a way to get an artist card your team might struggle winning but it can also stop the other team from winning. Therefore mixing teams is the only way to get longevity from the box or adopting six instead of nine cards. While a buzzer is in the box no batteries are included, so prior to the first game you’ll need to get a couple of AAAs. As expected it can get chaotic as a player from each team desperately tries to remember any Atomic Kitten song while another blasts The BeeGees on kazoo. Music sneaks into the schedules in other ways: The Hit List is a fresh twist on Name That Tune; BBC Three's The Rap Game UK is fiery and compelling; and there's a rich seam of documentaries like My Life As A Rolling Stone, Reclaiming Amy and Bros: After The Screaming Stops.

The world's most-watched non-sporting event, with an annual audience of over 200 million, it began in 1956 as a technical experiment to see whether a live, simultaneous, international broadcast was possible (in reality, there were so few televisions at the time that the contest was primarily consumed on radio). The ticking buzzer certainly drives some of that atmosphere but simply competing in teams always evokes everyone’s competitive side. There's always been a slight tension between the BBC's desire to serve popular music and the fact that it doesn't really put very much money into it - hence Whistle Test being shot in a broom cupboard. But by the law of averages, the BBC's talent shows managed to uncover some genuine talent, including Lemar (Fame Academy), Becky Hill ( The Voice UK) and Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley ( I'd Do Anything). The BBC lost the Brits to ITV three years later - but it still had the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, where prize categories included Most Brilliant Haircut and Most Horrible Thing, which was invariably won by spiders.

If you’re a Brit of a certain age, chances are you remember Top of the Pops, the weekly TV show that ran down the top 40 song chart. There are 8 categories to choose from, spanning the decades from the 60s to today, as well as one hit wonders and all-time chart toppers.

It attracted a huge following in the punk and indie scene, with bands like The Undertones, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees playing live; and Paul Weller taking charge of an entire episode, devoted to the topic of inequality. When the buzzer rings their time is up and play passes to the other team, to guess their artist cards.Anyway, successfully naming an artist claims the card for your team, and any left on the board after a minute are passed to the opposing team to have a go at them. Their opponent then has 15 seconds to respond with a different but also correct answer – perhaps Whigfield’s hit Saturday Night.
