About this deal

More advanced and lighter than its predecessors and with a more eye catching design, the 5800 promises high performance and is one of the latest cycling must haves.

Tiagra's cables now run beneath the bar tape, which is how the higher-end Shimano groupsets have it. The lightness needed in shifting is similar (if not the same) to that of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace setup. I would get a 1000 Euros from the cycle to work scheme and I migth be able to put in another 400 euros for accessories etc. Is there a handy table anywhere showing the (somewhat subjective) relationship between the different groupsets?Credit subject to status, UK residents only, Performance Cycling Limited acts as a broker and offers finance from a restricted range of finance providers.

A modern road bike groupset comprises of the derailleurs, shifters, brakes, chainset, bottom bracket, cassette, and chain. A key difference between 105 and Tiagra is that the 105 is intended for 11-speed and the large chainring has teeth between 46 and 53. The Tiagra HG500 10 Speed Road Cassette from Shimano is a high quality 10-speed cassette with hyperglide sprockets. Will I be able to replace them with new Tiagra shifters and be able to swap between the XT and 105 mechs as the mood takes me? There is though the ability with Tiagra to get a front shifter which will allow you to use a triple chainring at the front. As an aside, it means you can run new tiagra 4700 mechs with Shimano 11 speed road shifters and cassettes, or 11 speed mechs with new tiagra 10 speed shifters and any 10 speed cassette). A Rapidfire lever set is also available for use on flat bars; this retains the gear indicator window.

The brake levers aren't carbon fibre, and the alloy lever adds a bit of weight but, importantly, it also reduces the cost and makes no difference to performance. Tiagra is offered with both a double chainset (there are two chainrings) and a triple chainset (there are three chainrings) whereas 105 comes as a double only. Shimano says it has revised the cable pitch on the rear derailleur, claiming it now offers 'precise and long-lasting shifting performance'.The biggest difference between the groupsets is that 105 – which is the most popular groupset in the world, according to Shimano – is 11-speed (there are 11 sprockets on the cassette) whereas Tiagra is 10-speed. If that option interests you, then you will need to consider compatibility with your left-hand shifter along with the front derailleur.
