Diabetes insipidus can be identified by excessive thirst and urination in dogs, very pale urine, and a constantly increasing need for more water ( 13). For example, your dog drinking too much water can be a psychological problem or a learned behavior rather than a specific and known physical illness. At the most basic level, you could pop your hand in and lick the water off, which they will sometimes do,” says Hobaiter, who studies chimps in Uganda’s Budongo Forest Reserve.

Tiny bumps on the beetle’s back serve as a condensation site for moisture trapped in the morning fog. Some chimpanzees in Uganda have been observed using their hands to dig small wells in seemingly dry riverbeds. These breeds, as well as hunting and retrieving dogs, can be prone to excessive drinking because of their breed's occupation ( 31). There are references to serious droughts worldwide, in particular Egypt where the matriarch comes from (a nod to Atalla's own Egyptian background), but the main focus is on social and economic breakdown in the UK driven by the rains failing.Chimpanzees may live in rainforests, but even in places with lots of moisture, it can sometimes be difficult to find a drink. With supply in the Scottish cities drying up, Aida is forced back home to live with her mum at their rural farm. Was the animal kept on pasture in a mixed system that included crops, or was it in an industrial system with high animal numbers per hectare, in which over 90 percent of the feed is brought in? It's definitely possible for a dog to drink too much water, and it should be a cause for concern ( 18).

Thirsty Animals review: a climate dystopia novel by Rachelle

This novel joins the growing ranks of climate fiction, presenting a very narrow and very on-the-nose view of the consequences of climate change, namely extreme drought. Through her, the author takes us on an emotional journey, full of despair, but, fundamentally, not bereft of hope. She's a long-time dog owner who enjoys covering anything particularly related to the science of dogs.

This just kept throwing me out of a narrative that I was engaged in and I found it really distracting.
