About this deal

I originally read this book in physical form, and I also own a copy of the first book, where the illustration placement makes a lot more sense, and in general just looks better. Together with her best friend Tam, she joins Varjak on his mission to find a dog to save his family.

With stunning illustrations from acclaimed graphic artist Dave McKean, this award-winning story has become a modern classic.

It would be great if you make a post about the characters in his books, such as Varjak, Razor, Sally Bones, Holly, Kludge etc. Images Donate icon An illustration of a heart shape Donate Ellipses icon An illustration of text ellipses. It has all the hallmarks of a great adventure - friendship, heroes, battles and action all the way through! Although the Trio (Jay, Jethro and Jerome) are Varjak's littermates and do not bully him directly, they giggle and laugh at Julius' comments, alongside Jasmine.

I would love to see a prequel about Jelal, my memory is bad but I think I got the idea that Sally Bone was once his enemy as she had survived for a very long time before finally loosing to Varlak, I would love to read about their struggle. On a large piece of paper, A3 or bigger (eg back of a piece of wallpaper or similar) children could draw a chart of the characters in the story with annotations. He doesn't share his family's arrogance nor their egoistic and was incredibly selfless, showing fierce care for his friends. This story is where Varjak and his friends must overcome the powerful enemy, Sally Bones, a well crafted villain who is seeking to take over all the resources of the cats’ world and withholding their food by enforcing her brutal ‘Law’. His books immerse children in worlds where char acters explore their identity within systems of social injustice , inequity and prejudice .This gives you the opportunity to model to upper KS2 pupils how to read aloud with fluency, accuracy and expression. F. Said had to say on the subject back in 2013, "There will definitely be a third Varjak Paw book, but I don't think there'll be more. Corgi Books Age 7-9 Varjak Paw is an exciting and imaginative adventure story which is great to read aloud and to look at closely with its striking illustrations. The first four chapters of the book set the scene and introduce the reason for Varjak’s departure from the house.

BOOK OF THE MONTH - A heart-warming and hilarious story told in 25 chapters, perfect for the countdown to Christmas. My favourite part was when Varjak (The main character) defeated Razor (Someone in his gang by using his claw and scratching him in his face. Varjak walks in, and at first the dogs try to kill him, treating him as an intruder, but then Cludge walks in and tells the dogs that Varjak is a friend.

Further down in the Storm Drain, after wading through a dirty river, Varjak and his friends find a whole city under the real city.

The session is best suited for children in Year 3 and 4, but it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The Gentleman then holds Varjak paw's older brother Julius as a threat, Cludge then leaps through the window and chases off the Gentleman, Holly forgives Varjak. We, of course, meet both old and new characters in Varjak's adventures, some good, some bad, and some a mix and match of the two. I have also finished the book phoenix I also showed my best friend the book phoenix and she read it.They have written a further tension-filled episode and used the book as the context for creating non-fiction texts. I liked how it touched upon the little-explored pre-Islamic culture of ancient Iraq / Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilisation. It was rather violent in places and the punishment Sally Bones doles out is truly horrific, but I enjoyed the development of the characters from the first book. The story explores a number of themes and ideas giving lots to talk about including being different, bullying, friendship, courage and determination. We started off the book with me reading it aloud once a week to Naomi (aged 7) after school and before her swimming class.
