Margery and Clementine are such amazing characters and they are the heroines you want to be friends with.These two facts combined mean that I have an extremely soft spot for the elderly, especially senior citizens getting in trouble and solving crimes, and that's probably the only reason I'm giving this 3 stars instead of 2.

There is a generational aspect to the book, with Margery and Clementine being older and some of their co-workers being younger, with the students younger still. There are some very funny moments (the suspended school ceiling being a particular highlight for me 🤣🤣) amongst a great and engaging plot with excellent characters throughout. It is the fourth book in a series which did worry me slightly, as I haven’t read the others, but apart from spoiling the previous books (to be fair you can’t have a series without referencing past outcomes! Because Clementine seems odd about the death, she pestered Margaery in a cute and hilarious way to find out the truth. The dinner ladies, Clementine and Margery work together in the cafeteria of a school, serving the students in the lunch line (why do they say dinner)?This is my first dinner lady detectives book and although reference was made to previous books in the series, the book explained in enough detail the premise of what happened so you were able to get the jist of what had happened. It was very surface-level humour rather than anything particularly clever, but it did get the odd chuckle out of me, and I have encountered far worse attempts at humour, and for the most part it was. Instead, you are just following around these Dinner Lady Detectives as they try to figure out the murder using the resources a civilian has.

Especially if you’re on the lookout for cosy mysteries, a subgenre that doesn’t seem to be that represented in LGBT lit. I enjoy all of the characters, their interactions, their personal growth, and the evolution of their relationships. The storyline about this detective thing did not really give me a thrill for the crime and to an extent, I was amazed by it.It has to have the right balance of cute, quaint, edge, suspense, mystery, and engaging characters that keep me interested from book to book. Let's just say the police department needs to send their detectives back to police training because they immediately decided this was an accident. Again, in this instalment, a dead body winds up and the couple put their detective caps on, ready to solve all the mysteries that come their way. With little more than a hunch and a stray earring to go on, Clementine and Margery begin their own investigation, determined that whoever is responsible will get their just desserts.

But Clementine and Margery are suspicious as things aren't adding up, they delve into the death and suspect it's really murder.Fourth in the Dinner Lady Detective series finds Clementine and Margery up to solving another mystery. As always the book was well written with a captivating story line and well developed characters that I loved instantly both old and new. Really enjoyed reading this latest book, I really do hope there will be more mischief for the ladies to get into! This novel is another great addition to the series and Margery and Clementine are still up there with two of my favourite amateur detectives. Well, for a starter it showed that whenever gossip around and something can be held to be gossip, that certain person could spread the words all over.
