About this deal

My approach is a combination of straight talking advice mixed with humour, inspiration and practical takeaways. I think I was put of by the thickness of some of them, the terminology and the high flying Dr/Psychologist authors. I read this book as recommended by my mindset coach as she talked to me about hippo time (I now have a pic of a hippo on my mood board! The 1967 image of model Willy Van Rooy is an early example of narrative storytelling within the fashion shoot. The photographer, whose provocative work rose to prominence in the 1970s against a backdrop of the second-wave feminist movement, was one of the most impactful visual creators of his time.

Ten years on, reading the updated version, it rekindles the fire to be proactive and seek goals with confidence and determination, the best recipe for success. It doesn't necessarily mean 'get over it' or 'pull yourself together' (although there may be occasions when both responses are necessary).I never had much interest in Helmut Newton's work before I saw a film about him - "The Bad and the Beautiful".

It was here that he was drawn to the way fellow swimmers’ suits “stayed wet for a long time,” something he revisited in his work, such as Daryl Hannah’s 1984 photograph where, dressed in clear Perspex stilettos and a fuchsia one-piece, she bounces a crying baby on her knee. He first achieved international fame in the 1970s while working principally for French Vogue, where he was celebrated for his controversial scenarios and the ability to make a thoroughly planned photograph seem fresh and dynamic. Another from this series gives further clues: the androgynous suited female is flanked by a naked woman wearing only heels and a veil. The book’s sumptuous portfolio is supplemented by an illustrated chronology of more than 600 pages, contextualizing Hockney’s art with drawings, graphic work, portrait photos, and text based on the artist’s own writings as well as contemporary reviews. And the whole book is like that - you're encouraged to shift your perspective by thinking and looking at things in a different way. It’s an interesting moment to rerelease SUMO (1999), the 464-page Helmut Newton monograph that weighed 35kg and came with a specially designed Philippe Starck stand. SUMO is a titanic book in every respect: it is a tribute to the 20th century’s most influential, intriguing, and controversial photographer. I GOT THE 10th edition that was written in 2019 BUT HONESTLY in the 10th edition he should’ve changed his culturally appropriating name and overall logo.

Now, this XL edition celebrates 20 years of SUMO, the result of a project conceived by Helmut Newton some years ago.

The Paris backdrop is Newtonian in grainy black and white, an effect the photographer described as “black light. Elisabeth Binder: Royale Atmosphäre mit Königin Silvia macht gute Taten zum Genuss - 1,3 Millionen DM kamen zusammen in Tagesspiegel, April 7, 2000. I love the way the book was written as though Paul is talking to you, very accessible and I really liked the personal touches too. Now living and working in London, Newson has become one of the world’s most accomplished and influential designers.

SUMO, edited by June Newton, features a wide selection of over 400 pictures, most of which are published for the first time, covering every aspect of Newton’s outstanding career in photography: from his stunning fashion photographs, which pointed the way for generations of photographers, to his nudes and celebrity portraits. First published in 1999, the Helmut Newton SUMO was a titanic book that towered above anything previously attempted. Paul recommends that we label challenges (or potential challenges) on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is death. As an international speaker and performance coach, McGee is passionate about helping people change their mindset, choose to be more proactive, and create their own path to a better and more fulfilling life. The principles are easy to follow and the author also provides questions that would make you think about your life.At the time I was in a work situation which I didn't like and which I really needed to shut up and move on from so the book hit exactly the right note and I bought a copy. I'm not the target audience and if you have a proclivity for these sorts of things then maybe your life will be changed forever, mine was but only for the worse. His privileged childhood was spent being dressed by his mother in taffeta bows and swimming at the Berliner Schwimm Club.
