CCTV footage of Sally before and after she went to Norway reveals a new memory stick on her keychain. Whilst Perez questions Donna Killick about the DNA results, Tosh arrives in Norway to track down Andreas Hagan. The people who've been following Pérez and Tosh are with the Norwegian secret service and tell them Mathias Soderland, the prime suspect for Sally's death, is providing them with information on the far-right Norwegian Defense Army. Pérez continues to investigate the double murder case, but finds bureaucracy getting in the way, until he tracks down a rape victim and discovers that her attacker was the son of Phyllis Brennan.

In 2018, the Britbox streaming service acquired the exclusive rights to Shetland's Series 4, releasing new episodes weekly. At first it appears he threw himself from the cliff, but the autopsy finds he was tortured before being murdered the same way Bryd was. Donna confesses to killing Lizzie, who had threatened to tell her abusive husband about the affair with Duncan.

Although he'd claimed it was his first trip to Shetland, he was aware of roadwork that was done on the island a week earlier. Ploughing on, Pérez re-examines the evidence, but it is only when Catriona's brother reveals she had a secret hiding place at their old home – the same house where Catherine also lived – that he finally sees a glimmer of hope. The mastermind behind it was Connor's publisher, Jamie Narey, whose girlfriend was killed working as an anti-oil activist. Filming locations on or near Shetland have included Lerwick, the NorthLink ferry and the village of Wester Quarff, south of Lerwick.

He's not seriously injured, but something he says causes Pérez to realize Merran – who was on the phone with her father when he was shot – recognised her mother's doorbell ring. Pérez is forced to break the news to Drew, Sally's father, a former police officer who led the investigation into Lizzie's murder and now believes Thomas killed Sally. Perez began to suspect that a human trafficking gang on the island was responsible for killing Daniel and kidnapping Zezi.
