About this deal

She was particularly struck by the story of a young girl who had cut off her hair and disguised herself as a boy so she could earn money to support her family. If I ever end up teaching in a middle school, this is definitely a book I will have on the docket to pull out for a novel study. It follows a young girl in her day-to-day life in a poor area of Toronto [8] and it received the Governor General's Award for English-language children's literature in 2000. This installment was just as good as the first for me and it’s hard for me to choose between the two for a favourite! Throughout the book, Parvana grows closer to her older sister Nooria as well as the woman who appears in the window of a building close to where Parvana works.

I would recommend this trilogy to any young reader, in fact I think it is an important piece that all preteens should have on their shelves. I’m glad to say that my youngest sister was the person who recommended this book to me, and the middle school where I did one of my teaching internships also taught this book. The biggest change Parvana experiences in the book creates a solution that literally saves her family from starvation. The stories are set against backdrops as diverse as the remote north of Canada to Moscow's Red Square to an opium farm in Afghanistan. These books provided me with a greater understanding of what both women and men must go through in Afghanistan, living in fear of the Taliban. The result was The Breadwinner trilogy, which tells the compelling stories of Parvana and her best friend, Shauzia. These books appeal to me because the realities of war and the horrible hardships faced by the people at the hands of the Taliban are heartbreaking and important to be aware of. After an accident causes Diego's family to owe money to the prison in which they are incarcerated in, the boy must earn them money. The fifth book in Ellis's Breadwinner series, One More Mountain was published by Groundwood books in 2022, takes up Parvana's story as the Americans are leaving Afghanistan and the Taliban are regaining control in Kabul.

We also pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people. I think her journey to overcome major changes and challenges as a young girl growing up in Afghanistan is inspiring. It may sound a little weird to say because of the horrors that we may find happening in that part of the world, but I tend to love books that are set in Afghanistan. She leaves along with her mother and younger siblings, but Parvana stays as she looks like a boy and her appearance will be difficult to explain.
