About this deal

As I mentioned previously, I felt like there was a much shorter learning curve to this lens than there was when I got my Olympus M. Diffraction still caused some loss in sharpness, of course, but my impression is that the only sharpness loss I saw at these apertures was from diffraction. I've seen some great shots taken with the 150-400mm at 1000mm - the caveat was that the subject (an eagle) was reasonably close and they offered rarely-seen perspectives, like the details of a wild raptor's feet. I do think however that its’s important to add the context that these were not macro or even close-up tests, and that the advantage of the 60mm only held out until F4 (even there the edge sharpness is very close). I'm not suggesting Lenstip is wrong, just that if nine sites say it's good and one says it isn't, what might that negative review be doing the others aren't?Overall, I felt like there was a much shorter learning curve to this lens than there was when I got my Olympus M. It can take up to 12 minutes to update the firmware on the E-M1X, including downloading and writing the firmware data to the camera. Chromatic aberrations don’t seem to show up while shooting in bright or high-contrast situations, which is excellent news.

Its focal length and other macro features not only make this lens ideal for close-up work, but it also has some versatility for other subjects, particularly portraits, and arguably even picking out details in landscapes and architectural scenes. You can also get some nice rounded bokeh effects when shooting at a little more of a distance and there is an appropriate light source in the background. In a few other awkward “bracing” situations, I find this smaller MFD to be useful also, which is why I think a larger MFD isn’t universally superior.

I know they can’t unless they use the mpe-65 on an automated system or get a tube lens and microscope objective. As you can see in this butterfly image, and macro and super macro images in general, depth of field is shallow, and there is a general learning curve for DoF for all macro photography. CEWE, one of Europe's leading photo printing providers, announced the winners of its annual CEWE Photo Awards contest, which drew over 500,000 submissions from 147 countries. This lens notably lacks autofocus and image stabilization, and it has a much smaller working distance.

Olympus Corporation still exists but its imaging division was sold off a few years back to the newly minted OM Digital Solutions, who seemingly got right to work (or rather, continued working) on new Micro Four Thirds products. You can get an idea of the ultra high magnification here with the Magnolia blossom and in the next flower purple statice photo. I have just spent two weeks using this lens for macro work, and everything that I shot (mushrooms and slime molds, from . Thousands great macro shots of insects done with shorter focal lengths somehow show that 180mm is not needed. Spec-wise, the Micro Four Thirds 90mm focal length and 2x magnification translate to a full-frame equivalent 180mm focal length lens with 4x magnification.

John Vickers - According to the link you provided, the Tamron does only 1:1 (not 2:1), is 60mm (not 90mm), has no weather sealing, no image stabilization, has much poorer build quality and awful AF compared with the Olympus. Problem with the 90mm could be its internal focusing and a more substantial loss of focal length when focusing close; also the barrel is quite long (also not as long as the fully extended Sigma).Micro Four Thirds system users will soon have a new 180mm equivalent, image-stabilized macro lens to consider for their arsenal. Their photography allows them to pay attention to the details, to be mindful, and to appreciate all of the beauty and nuances of our world. Common and less costly autofocus macro lenses for Micro Four Thirds are usually 30mm or 45mm in focal length, with 1x magnification. Although there are a few other macro lenses available for Micro Four Thirds shooters both from Panasonic and OM System, none of them are true competitors to the 90mm f/3. All of that said, while f/4 times 2 is f/8, the 90mm's f/5 at closest focusing distance gives f/10, which already is more limiting, however well the lens might compare wide open to the image quality of the 300mm.
