It is the first film to be officially authorized by Bowie's estate, [6] and takes its title from the 1972 Bowie song of the same name. Moonage Daydream” initially failed to chart when released as a single in 1971 by Arnold Corns, Bowie’s side project that has come to be seen as a “dry run” for the Ziggy experiment. The film is divided into nearly two dozen "chapters" in the DVD release with the first hour covering Bowie starting in London up to his departure to West Berlin.An extensive digital version will be released on September 16th, followed by a CD on November 18th and, finally, a vinyl release expected in 2023.

Parlophone offers a soundtrack to director Brett Morgen's highly-anticipated documentary about David Bowie. Among the centerpieces being heard for the first time is a live medley of "The Jean Genie" and The Beatles' "Love Me Do," performed with Jeff Beck on guitar during the incendiary set that saw Bowie announce the retirement of his Ziggy Stardust persona. Sinclair also criticized a perceived lack of sufficient coverage for certain periods of Bowie's career, singling out his tenure on EMI America Records and his membership in Tin Machine. In 2002, Bowie published a book about his experience between 1972 and 1973 and named it after this song: “Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust”.Bowie emerges from these pre-Berlin years as a significant rock-and-roll star on the London scene making an impact throughout much of Britain and the United States. The first hour of the film begins with a long film clip of Bowie performing a live version of a largely narrated version of " All the Young Dudes" before singing the choruses later made famous by Mott the Hoople's recording of the song. He is depicted as having entered the height of his career and formed a new life style with his new wife Iman Abdulmajid. In an excerpt from his (never-published) autobiography, Bowie claimed that the song was based on an unspecified friend of his, possibly Vince Taylor.
