I certainly wouldn't consider myself a history geek, so it is a pleasant surprise that I am truly enjoying learning so much about British history. Instead he allows the reader to absorb the bustle and colour of London life generation by generation, acculmulating a sense of the city constantly in change. It's the history of London since before the Roman invasion till modern times told through life stories of generations upon generations of a few of the same families.

Set in the New Forest which is located in the south of England this goes all the way back to 1099 as it charts the progress of the region and all those who dwelt there. While narratives and positive happenstances occupy spans of pages, descriptions of the tragic or horrific are limited to brief sentences. The author places his vignettes at the most dramatic moments of that city's history, leaping from Caesar's invasion to the Norman Conquest to the Great Fire to (of course) the Blitz, with many stops in between. Focusing on the Romanovs, Karpenkos, Popov, Suvorins and Bobrovs, it tells their intertwined stories in great detail and depth, with great attention to accuracy too. Fast becoming a best-seller it quickly reached the top of the New York Times best-seller list in no time at all. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one.

and the latter chapters in particular (Victorian through present) do not have the same complexity as the earlier stories.
