About this deal

Making use of the supremely useful modified bricks with studs on three sides, we’re able to construct an entirely studs-out cube on top of three 2×2 round plates allowing the flower head to be built outwards rather easily. If the LEGO Group is hoping to grow its adult market with these gateway models, then it’s definitely going the right way about it. Brickset, the Brickset logo and all content not covered by The LEGO Group's copyright is, unless otherwise stated, ©1997-2023 Brickset ltd. The stems are constructed using the same straight and angled Technic connectors as in the larger set, which can be shortened, straightened, or lengthened as needed by adding and/or replacing parts. It’s interesting to note that each flower makes use of two lime green 2×2 round plates, with the third closely matching the colour of the petals.

The LEGO Botanical Collection which was introduced in 2021 introduces a range of sets meant for adult LEGO fans to "bring a touch of nature into their home and unwind as they create and customize their botanical builds". With two leaves allocated per flower, the assembly line of stems is complete and once inserted into the flower heads, LEGO 40461 Tulips is ready for display.

It’s not a major eyesore by any means, but it does seem like a missed opportunity for a new element re-colour. Until the day comes where we see a LEGO Honey I Shrunk The Kids-themed set, minifigures wouldn’t be appropriate (nor to scale) here. I emerged from my dark ages in 2011 after rediscovering my old sets in my parents' attic and haven't looked back since. More option though, and this construction does give us a bunch of hard-to-find bright yellow-green Technic connectors, so the trade offs are reasonable.

The way they are connected looks slightly awkward but most likely they'll be inside the vase and out of sight anyway. It’s not the first time the LEGO Group has produced a tulip-themed set, but with the recently-released (and currently still sold out at LEGO.As depicted on the front of the box there are three tulips included within the set, each one in a unique but altogether cohesive and spring-appropriate colour palette of white, bright light yellow and lavender. A single 2×2 jumper plate on the top/inside of the ‘cube’ with an added plant flower stem completes the tulip head. Once retired, the expected annual growth will be close to 7% after the second year, which will value the set between 12 € and 13 € shortly after it is retired.

It’s also worth noting that while the brightly-coloured lime green stems work well as a standalone set, it does stand out a bit more when placed alongside the darker green stems from 10280 Flower Bouquet and 40460 Roses. The easiest and least time-consuming approach for many builders is to tackle all three simultaneously, but should you have any family members or curious onlookers nearby now is the time to get them involved. In addition to the two 18+ botanical sets, 10280 Flower Bouquet and 10281 Bonsai Tree that we reviewed recently, two smaller ones with a younger age rating have also been released, 40460 Roses and 40461 Tulips, just in time for Valentine's Day. The medium nougat flowers in that used two different types of 4-wide car bonnets whereas this one uses the same one for the eight outer petals. These sets present an affordable entry to the new botanical collection and look beautiful and realistic when placed in an attractive vase, although I don't think the two varieties display that well together. Some LEGO® sets contain small parts that are NOT suitable for and may pose a hazard to children under 3 years of age. The three herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes share the same design DNA as all the other flowers in the botanical collection but are the only ones with lime-green stems, formed using 3-long Technic connectors which in that colour are unique to this set. The sets in the LEGO Botanical Collection include a number of elements made from plant-based plastic, produced using sustainably sourced sugarcane. Each flower head is built first in exactly the same fashion but with different coloured bricks for added variety. Comprising mostly of lime green Technic axle connectors and red notched axles, it’s a pretty easy build, and unless you have trouble lining up axles or especially weak finger muscles, there shouldn’t be any issues here.
