About this deal

Read on to learn more, to see the results I got from shooting some, and what you can expect from it too. Microphen is designed to give you a really flat (or grey) negative, which allows you to edit in the contrast however you’d like when printing or scanning the photos.

I’ve had Rollei RPX 400 recommended to me as another versatile film for pushing, and it’s one of my favourites at box speed, so that might be the next challenge, or perhaps going for broke (and the limits of my light meter) with another stop or two! It’s a great option for sports, action, travel, journalism, documentary, and indoor available light photography. High-acutance developers do not have any solvent in them, so they render solid, sharp grains on your film. There’s much more to HP5 PLUS than meets the eye – something that regular shooters of this film will be more than aware of. Since then it has progressed through a number of versions, with HP5 plus ( HP5+ for short) being the latest.

ILFORD HP5 PLUS - EMULSIVE Love at first roll: ILFORD HP5 PLUS - EMULSIVE

In contrast, my other camera, loaded with Fuji Press 800 at box speed, needed to be on a tripod for all shots. It certainly has limits — for example, the lower part of the car interior shows a lot of contrast and some significant loss of detail in the deepest shadows. Ilford was also known through its Selo brand that was selling its films between the 1920s and the 1940s. The film’s range and latitude are broad and provides ample space for exposure to be shifted into the shadow or the light, although it deals better with maintaining highlights than it does with capturing shadow detail when shot at box speed. I remember pushing HP4 to 6400 ASA to photograph the local rock band way back in the seventies with wonderfully grainy, contrasty results. To understand more about the details above you can check out our film guide or if you want some inspiration then head over to our page on choosing your next film. Although these tend to skew towards pushing their own developers, rather than testing with every available solution. Perhaps this is a geographic bias, with those from North America favouring one and those from Europe the other? Try pushing or pulling it, using it in unusual lighting conditions or even do something completely new like a double exposure! If you push or pull other films you have to keep the ISO settings consistent and process it against that ISO).

The films were processed simultaneously in the same tank, developed in Adox FX-39 II developer diluted 1 + 14 for 9.I think the bottom line on whether HP5 Plus is good for your street photography comes down to your personal taste on the contrast. But for capturing grainy and atmospheric scenes where the attributes of the emulsion form part of the story, HP5 Plus is ideal. And let’s not forget that ISO 400 rating gives you plenty of speed to shoot in the potentially ever-changing lighting conditions out in the street too. In the image below, you’ll see that the initial scan (top-left) lacks definition — which appeared even more evident when I printed it. It wasn't just the name and packaging that changed over time, the film had a different ISO in earlier versions too, finally settling at ISO 400 in 1989.

There are lots of images online where people have pushed HP5 to its absolute limits or in very low light, and still got stunning results, and that is why the film is so loved for its flexibility.
