Heroes perpetually leap from frying pan to fire and there is even a chapter entitled ‘There and Back Again’. From the incredible imagination of Chris Smith - bestselling author and now a major new solo talent - comes an extraordinary accidental. Chris Smith has wanted to be an author ever since he was eight and won a competition by writing story about a baby dinosaur who loved biscuits. Think Lord of the rings meets bedknobs and broomsticks with a bit of harry potter, echoes of Labyrinth, adventure, creatures and a quest despite Frankie raging it is most assuredly NOT A QUEST.

Smith even cites the rules of the genre explicitly to readers, reminding them, for example, that every villain has a whole in their plan. It is YA (young adult) but don't let anyone tell you these books can only be enjoyed by or purely for youngsters. Chris Smith has wanted to be an author ever since he was eight and won a competition by writing a story about a baby dinosaur who loved biscuits. A fun and funny adventure- with a narrator that frequently breaks the fourth wall - that deconstructs and gently mocks a lot of the classic quest fantasy tropes.I couldn’t find the name of the cover artist but I think it might have also been Kenneth Anderson, going off the similarity to the internal illustrations. I’ve not read a middle grade for 24 years and although I’m a lot older now I enjoyed every second of this book it made me feel like a child all over again. I really loved seeing the progression from all of the characters and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The chapters are short, there are diary entries, view points change, overall it is a light hearted adventure read and if you need to drop out of our world for a little while this is a fab one to enter. She provides a running commentary in the form of snide comments and scornful remarks that remind readers just how silly all this fantasy stuff is.

Frankie did have big plans to watch YouTube and eat pot noodles that weekend but it looks like she'll just have to go on an epic mega-dangerous quest instead .To have any chance of rescuing her grandfather, Frankie has to get up to speed, quickly, with all the rules and lore of the genre (luckily, Joel is usually on hand to help, in a very annoying way). Frankie Best Hates Quests brings together gaming, fantasy and relatable characters in an accessible epic adventure! This is unbearable news for Frankie, who is forced to accept – when Grandad is kidnapped – that she is just going to have to go on a big quest with lots of silly fantasy creatures. Not only is she stuck at Grandad’s for a whole week while her parents swan off to the arctic, now she’s discovered that there’s NO WIFI anywhere in the house!
