I found it enjoyable and believe that most any fan of epic fantasy will find something to like here.

I'm happy to say that "Shadows of the Apt" is the second epic Fantasy series after Sanderson's "Stormlight Archive" that convinces me on all levels. The twist to give all the factions aspects of insect behaviour seems a hard one to get your head around at first, but makes everyone distinct and interesting to follow. This book does have some very dark moments including a torture scene, a brutal murder, and the very brief glimpse of a rape scene (nothing graphic or descriptive), in case these types of scenes are hard to read for some readers.You’re aware Stenwold’s plan to avoid the invasion has failed, that there’s been some kind of betrayal and that some of his friends have gone missing. However, as the possibility of the Polish rights being sold seems extremely viable, there is an epilogue to this tale of Frankish ignorance, for in Poland, one would strongly assume, I may finally see my name in print in its unadulterated form.

Thalric badly wounds Tisamon with his sting but is badly wounded in turn by Tynisa and Scuto succeeds in blowing up the train before the Wasps can use it.The cast of characters is varied, fleshed out, and I particularly enjoyed the amount of work the author put into his antagonists. Ant-Kinden are short but very strong soldiers to go to war and they can communicate in each others minds without talking.its the start to an epic series, it has characters that I can care about, an intriguing setting, it has espionage and great battles. He flees, scarred by the experience, and finds the other two some time after their own escape, arousing Totho's suspicions. The moths have been reduced to living in a few scattered cities while the former slave races populate an area known as the lowlands.

The normal races of humans (for they're all human) have a thriving steampunk society and they fear the magic.Second read, March 2021: after having listened to the first 4 books which contain one story arc I went back for a re-read before going on to the next. Adrian Tchaikovsky’s characters and world grew on me and I finished the last ¾ of the book in half the time it took me to read the first ¼. Tisamon eventually beats her but she gave him a challenge no-one had for years and he acknowledges her.
