But there’s an issue this time, Prince Lothric has been chosen to sacrifice himself for the Flame but has refused and instead wants to let the Flame finally die. And its lobby area, Majula, is my favourite in the series with its serene music and beautiful sunset-lit cliffside overlooking the sea, potentially looking over where the Giants or Nashandra came from and making you wonder what else is out there.

While The Ringed City sets the stage for the final act of the Dark Souls trilogy, the initial DLC takes place in a relatively small and sparse world. After years of refinement and quality of life changes (more of which were added by players themselves in the likes of the Cinders mod), this entry was rather more polished than what came before. The game comes with the same mechanics as before, including Bonfires, Souls, and challenging combat. And, after much teeth gritting, I can see why Dark Souls is seen as one of the most influential games of all time – even influencing the way I play games to this day.

Dark Souls and its predecessor Demon's Souls garnered recognition due to the series' high level of difficulty. This is to be expected, of course, as it’s generally intended to be a late- or post-game experience. The world of Dark Souls is confusing without a map to guide you, but it all leads back to Firelink Shrine.

We never saw these characters in the height of their power, but based on their relationships with other bosses, we know they held power in this world before they gave their bodies to the Flame. Ludleth is already there, meaning you have at least four boss fights to look forward to (one of which is surprisingly easy). Believe it or not, we've finally reached the events that you actually play through in Dark Souls (aside from that little detour with Manus).You’ll pick up a sock that used to belong to the next boss before they turned to the dark side, or speak to some dodgy NPC who’s just hanging around next to a bunch of enemies, waiting for someone to pass by so they can tell you their life story. Because you had more storyline interactions with the other characters, Dark Souls II felt a little more fleshed out, with your character taking more of a presence in what’s going on in the world.

Players can also engage in both player versus player combat and cooperative gameplay using invasion or summoning mechanics. She represents everything dark about humanity, and the only thing she wants is to usher in an Age of Dark.

This Abyss can be described as the darkness found within all mankind, and it could threaten to snuff out the First Flame if left unchecked.
