But that sense of humanity always feels wrong as the reader, there is something just off enough that it's obvious he is not a good person in entirety. The whole novel is peppered with fun, games, ghosts, ghouls, poltergeists, some magic spells, fairytales, gods and some romance! This king also engages his court in the capture, baiting, and torture of mythological creatures for revenge and sport with some gory details including a unicorn horn snapped off.

She could not risk the Erlking finding out that she knew, and she couldn’t trust anyone to stay silent. I'm not sure I'd read another retelling of hers, because even though I've enjoyed what I've read of her work so far, some more than others, I always have ended up with a sense of exhaustion after every one of them.
