Recorded amidst a plume of sweet-smelling smoke, Blackened Sky–produced in part by Chris Sheldon (Pixies, Therapy? Biffy Clyro have never been a band to repeat themselves, which is why they run so comfortably from delicate balladry to frenetic riffing. But when it came to record their sixth album, Opposites, another dichotomy arose that almost ended the band. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian also awarded the album three stars, declaring that " Opposites may not be the career-defining masterpiece it's intended as, but it's certainly not the pompous disaster it could have been: it has failings, but not the ones you might expect.

Simon Neil told Kerrang magazine about the new album on 8 December, playfully saying "The soft bits are softer, and the hard bits are harder. The band's second album, The Vertigo of Bliss was released on 16 June, to positive reviews which focused on the more experimental style of the album in comparison to Blackened Sky, as well as the introduction of string sections. That may be true, but for classic Biffy singalongs, there’s the singles A Hunger In Your Haunt and Unknown Male 01, the latter boasting a groove as deep as the Mariana Trench. NME journalist Dan Stubbs described the album as "flipping between edgy and anthemic – Biffy's best modes.

When it emerged, someone at major label Warners was savvy enough to hear an arena-headliner in waiting.Spawning six singles – including UK top 5 hit Mountains and the brass-powered stomp of The Captain– Only Revolutions is free of filler. In 2018, the group released the live acoustic album MTV Unplugged: Live at Roundhouse, London, which reached number 2 on the Scottish Albums Chart and number 4 on the UK Albums Chart. The album is certified Gold in the UK, having sold over 220,000 copies, and as of February 2009 has sold over 300,000 worldwide.
