About this deal

They’re great for growing strawberries too, and they’re just the right size for growing wigwams of peas and beans. One thing about small pots is that if you grow tall plants the stability is not good unless they lean against something – I suspect string attached above and fixed into the soil is a better guide than sticks for small 6 inch pots if you want a 6ft plant….

Applying liquid morning and evening (lunchtime too if temp exceeds 27C) means plants are always receiving water and nutrients on a daily basis. These pots have a unique base with 6 feet and 2 tier drainage holes, hard wearing to withstand all weather conditions. Normally I use bags and plant 3 seed potatoes per bag, but this year I decided to use 30 litre buckets. Not everyone has spacious gardens or allotments, so taking a little time to plan what type of potatoes you want to grow and where, will reap big rewards.Once growth starts to appear then backfill just leaving one or two leaves exposed, continue doing this every time the plant grows until you reach the top. inch pots work fine for Black Russian beefsteaks (8-10lb per plant), Rhizopots work well for Super Marmande (8-12lb per plant), as they do for all bush plants (Maskotka etc). It’s all about getting the most from your limited space and there are plenty of variety choices to help you decide which one might be best for you. For the best results, you should use the highest quality soil that you can, look for soil which is suited to container gardening as this type allows water to drain easily. Earlies, second earlies and maincrop potatoes can all be grown successfully by the amateur gardener in their own garden or on their allotment but they do need quite a bit of room.

Sometimes the pot design does differ if a different supplier is used but pot quality will not be compromised.

Traditionally, especially in the USA, a pot that holds 5 to 10 gallons (US) of soil is considered suitable for a tomato plant. Oxygen is prevented from entering into the root area below and the gasses that are given off by respiration are prevented from escaping. Made from food safe plasticthey are thick and will not crack or split with a smooth black finish and strong handles. In a 30ltr pot if you wish to grow a Medium size potato then go with no more than 2 seed potatoes per pot. I did come across an article last year which tried a few different things inc different number of potatoes in each bag and using small vs large seed potatoes etc.

I haven't done this before so don't know what to expect, but figure it is worth the experiment to find out the best methods for next year. The buckets with 3 potatoes each were planted in a different sort of compost (fresh from the hotbin rather than from my recycled bin) and the later buckets were harvested earlier as they were developing spots on the leaves, which the hotbin buckets are not. There are few ways people use to prepare their potatoes but none seem to have much of an effect on the eventual harvest, so choose whichever method you prefer. Alternatively, and if space is very limited then you could simply grow maincrop potatoes only, in bags or containers. By having a steady supply of water and nutrients available, is doesn’t really matter what the best container size for tomatoes is – within reason of course. I meant to try some with a few sprouts and some with all of them, but forgot and planted all without rubbing any off.

Plants are left to “get on with it” so a root system that cover a bigger area is going to be able to find more water and nutrients. However, by watering and feeding so that plants can take what they want, when they want, means that they won’t grow big root systems because they don’t need to! If you aren’t sure which is the best compost for growing potatoes in pots, your local garden centre will be able to help you choose the right soil.A few years back I tried it with an 80ltr dustbin, my thought being the uppermost seed would have more depth. I have watered them diligently, so it is unlikely to be a shortage of water, and indeed the potatoes don't have that dryish texture that you get when potatoes have been very short of water.
