About this deal

This poem stands out against the rest of the collection, with the extended metaphor of keys and key-cutting to describe the nature of their relationship. It has the obvious sexual connotations but also explores the idea of things fitting together and being made for each other. The title here is an obvious aural pun on ‘father’, suggesting that there were still things left for the father and son left to do together. The return to the personal, Sheers constantly trying to link the two, ‘you are with me’ resounds on this idea of connection. Sheers, throughout Farther, is trying desperately to link himself to his father. The very purpose of the walk to reestablish a connection they have both felt grow old. The final quatrain is one of the few examples of full rhyme in the collection and is deployed as a reflection of the trite, insincere effect of the woman on his affections.

Skirrid Hill comes from the Welsh for Ysgirid Fawr, meaning “shattered mountain” and implying are detail about the father/son relationship. The phrase can also mean, “separated.” These two are separated as the poem progresses. The setting is almost clichéd — the lovers are on holiday in the romance capital of Europe, Paris. Despite this, the setting seems irrelevant; their relationship is not enhanced by the location and they seem isolated from the rest of the world. The ending suggests that their love affair is in the past. In older literature the spelling Skyrrid is sometimes encountered and the mountain is also referred to locally as the Holy Mountain or Sacred Hill. [8] The ruins of an Iron Age hill fort and a mediæval chapel, dedicated to St. Michael, lie at the summit. [10] [11] Rudolf Hess used to walk here when he was held prisoner at nearby Maindiff Court during the early 1940s. [6] North of the mountain at Llanvihangel Crucorney, the The Skirrid Inn claims to be one of the oldest pubs in Wales. [12] Ownership and access [ edit ]

The Farrier’s old fashion sense is furthered. Not only has he used the same ‘apron’ for quite some time, but his habits also suggest an age to the character. The ‘roll-up’ cigarettes that he smokes portray a rejection of the artificial, him preferring to create his own cigarettes, rather than buy them from elsewhere. The focus on his ‘sideburns’ paint a physical image of the Farrier, focusing on his facial hair is a typically masculine image, furthering the elevation of his masculinity. Here we have our first hint of the uneasiness in male/female relationships in the collection. It is important that it is a female horse – use of the pronoun ‘she’ encourages us to extend the horse as a representation of all females. Summary: A traverse around the base and steep climb to the summit followed by a gradual descent along the ridge.Yet for me, it is the contemporary resonance of Sheers’ poems that makes them so poignant and enjoyable. Perhaps it is because I so often find myself immersed in the poetry of the past that, which whilst often brilliant, does not resonate with me personally, but Sheers’ seems to me to be writing for a twenty-first century audience. This collection, published in 2006 when he was only 32, I feel speaks to a new generation and his concerns are those of the contemporary reader even as he delves into the past. As such, they vibrate with meaning. It is also entirely incongruent with the collection in terms of imagery, because it is one of the few pieces that draws relations between people and man-made objects – in the rest of the collection, most parallels are drawn between the world of man and the world of nature.
