Ireland’s fifth and final victim was 41-year-old Maltese chef Emanuel Spiteri. On the night of 12 June, Ireland followed Emanuel from the Coleherne. They talked and then went to Emanuel’s Catford flat. I, er, killed him with a plastic bag. I put that over his head and killed him with that.' Colin Ireland. Fourthly, that he held no grudge against the gay community and that he had chosen gay men as his victims simply because they were easy targets.'It might as well have been women.' Serial Killer Files: The Boogey Man, Vampire of Düsseldorf, Monster of the Andes & Beast of Ukraine* They were again alone and broke. In 1966, 12-year-old Colin had to take on another stepfather as his mother remarried. This time, he refused to take the surname. Instead, he reverted to Ireland. Ironically, this man turned out to be the closest thing to stability Colin would ever know. Officer: 'Why are you doing this?'Ireland: 'Because I set out to see cos I’ve read several books on serial killers and you see, you know I wondered if it could be possibly done and got away with.’Officer: 'But what was your aim in all that?'Ireland: 'Just to see if it could be done alright, so I’ll leave you to get on with it. Bye bye.' IN THE OVEN* (J'zyra Thompson) - Texas toddler burns to death in the oven after 'game with siblings' goes wrong. But Ireland’s counter forensic measures were only so that he would be free to kill. He wanted the police to realise they were all the work of one serial killer.

The Investigation

WHO THEY Those featured include Ed Gein , the homicidal mama’s boy who inspired fiction’s most famous Psycho , Norman Bates; Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi , sex-crazed killer cousins better known as the Hillside Stranglers; and the Beanes , a fifteenth-century cave-dwelling clan with an insatiable appetite for human flesh Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future. The dark side of human nature is an endless source of morbid fascination, and with this book we go right to the heart of some of the most appalling human behavior. Despite the brutality of the topic, the author's conversational writing style makes this an easy book to read. Ireland’s name was on the last published list of whole life tariff prisoners, meaning that he would stay in prison for the rest of his natural life.

During this period, Colin unskilled and untrained supported himself through various jobs. These include being a restaurant chef, a volunteer fireman and a bouncer at various bars including a gay nightclub. The lanky, malnourished target of bullying had become a burly, big bloke quite capable of handling himself and others. Despite Dunn and Walker drinking in the same pub, they weren’t linked because they lived in different parts of London. They were therefore investigated by the police from their respective areas. The Dunn murder barely made a paragraph in the local paper. The police traced Spiteri’s most likely route home from the Coleherne. His train journey home went through Charing Cross station, a station that had just been fitted with one of London’s first CCTV cameras. There was 450 hours of footage to shift through. In January 1993, a gay man living alone in South London had been found dead in his home. He had been partially eaten by his dogs. WHY THEY DO For pleasure and for profit. For celebrity and for “companionship.” For the devil and for dinner. For the thrill of it, for the hell of it, and because “such men are monsters, who live . . .Peter spilt his drink on Ireland. They chatted and soon left together. On the way, Ireland put on gloves. In Peter’s Battersea apartment, Ireland gagged him with knotted condoms. This was foreplay. Peter willingly let himself be bound with cord to his four-poster bed. Homeless and penniless, Colin soon resorted to robbery. At 17, he was caught and sentenced to spend time at Hollesly Bay, a borstal. These were notorious British reform schools that were infamous for their brutal and austere regimes. Despite this, Hollesly offered therapy and vocational training. Colin hated it. He again ran away. True Crime isn’t just about the perpetrators; it’s about understanding society, recognizing the factors that contribute to such acts, and ensuring the tales of the victims live on. Ted Bundy: Discover not only Ted Bundy’s disturbing history, but also get a glimpse into his mind through his unique drawings. On 20 August 1993, at the Old Bailey, London, Ireland was charged with the murders of Walker, Dunn, Bradley, Collier and Spiteri. Ireland was sentenced to life imprisonment for each of the five killings. But a serious street fight around one in the morning had attracted Ireland’s attention. In trying to get a good look out the window, Ireland had accidentally placed a finger down on a bar that ran across the window. It was a fingerprint he didn’t clean off. I remember walking down the road, and I thought they must see in my face that I have just murdered someone.' Colin Ireland. But this would only prove useful in proving the killer was there. Without a computerised database, they couldn’t link that fingerprint to Ireland’s previous more minor crimes. The other problem area, for me, was with the 'Why They Kill' section. We're lead to believe that all serial killers have mother issues, come from abusive homes, and are abnormally fixated on sex. While this is a general truth for many killers, it's an oversimplification and not true for all killers. The author also appears to support the nurture over nature theory, which is another generality that doesn't hold true. Abuse, in and of itself, does not create a serial killer. The fact is that, most often, it's a combination of nature and nurture, and occasionally simply nature. In fairness, much of the neuroscience research in this area has been published within the past decade, before this book's publication. Still, I felt this section tried too hard to simplify a complicated issue. A popular psychology professor in Seattle, Sheila works hard to keep her secrets hidden. On the surface, she’s an expert in human behavior and a well-liked educator, but nobody knows she’s a recovering sex addict in therapy—not even the love of her life, Morris. And she needs it to stay that way, or she could lose everything. He also placed two teddy bears in a 69 position on top of Peter. Ireland would often leave such items as symbols of innocence lost. He wanted to have his place in history as a serial killer. That is sadly what he achieved.' Martin Finnegan

The Serial Killer Files: The Who, What, Where, How, and…

Something I did enjoy with this book is that it did have a wide scope that introduced me to a broader range of killers than I was previously familiar with. And with his desperate and not so thinly veiled attempt to promote himself as an entertainment writer (by providing top 12 lists of his favorite killer movies and fiction--seriously) I came away with one or two recommendations. And while he does include a bibliography, he doesn't ever source his material and claims in the text, so its ultimately for show and minor reference than any real use. Our quest to understand True Crime Cases isn’t merely about indulging in dark tales. It’s a pursuit to:

The FBI has become a clearinghouse for these crimes,” Morton said, “and we stand ready to assist local law enforcement when they are faced with an active serial murder case. This new research is one more tool to help investigators.” WHO THEY ARE: Those featured include Ed Gein, the homicidal mama’s boy who inspired fiction’s most famous Psycho, Norman Bates; Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi, sex-crazed killer cousins better known as the Hillside Stranglers; and the Beanes, a fifteenth-century cave-dwelling clan with an insatiable appetite for human flesh Serial Killers: Our Serial Killers Casebook holds spine-chilling narratives of those who’ve unleashed chaos multiple times.
