About this deal

The RT-AX86U Pro is significantly less expensive, of course, and I prefer its profile. The RT-AX88U Pro has a rather huge footprint, although it is very well suited for placing on a laptop cooling pad, if you wanted to. Would one or two more RT-AX86S do the job or would RT-AX86U Pro be better for main router? Also I imagine the current extender would do just fine in the basement for now? Some updates may inadvertently cause a particular model to go haywire, likely because the company tries to do so much with its routers. Other ASUS routers that will eventually support VLAN on the LAN side include: GT-AX11000 Pro, GT-AX6000, ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000, RT-AX88U Pro, ZenWiFi Pro ET12, ZenWIFI Pro XT1

The results in my testing, so far … the rt-ax86u pro is a solid router that works very well with my rt-ax82u in mesh. No resets, everything is communicating well, and both the app and web gui work flawlessly. Post 48 hours … Zero issues. It shares all common features and settings collectively available in Asus Wi-Fi routers, as I detailed in this primer post. It's similar to any Dual-band Asus Wi-Fi 6 router, including the non-Pro version or the GT-AX6000.VLAN capability on the LAN side was added with the release of Firmware: 9.0.0.6.102.3506 (Beta Version) NAT Passthrough : PPTP Pass-Through, L2TP Pass-Through, IPSec Pass-Through, RTSP Pass-Through, H.323 Pass-Through, PPPoE relay By the look, most of us can’t distinguish the RT-AX86S from the RT-AX86U, and it’s even harder to tell the RT-AX86U vs RT-AX86U Pro apart. Kid Network: A separate Wi-Fi SSID with kid-unfriendly online content automatically filtered out. It's a network with a special QoS setting.

Despite having new hardware specs and features, the RT-AX88U Pro proved to be a standard Asus router in my trial. Specifically, instead of one Gigabit WAN and eight Gigabit LANs, the Pro now has two 2.5Gbps Multi-Gig ports (one WAN and one LAN) and four Gigabit LANs. Additionally, it also has a faster CPU. However, I think there is some information that has been overlooked in previous replies. The two routers differ in their 2.4Ghz networking - the AX86U is 3x3 and therefore can support 3 concurrent spatial streams, whereas the AX88U is 4x4 and therefore supports 4 concurrent spatial streams. My network is 2.4Ghz heavy due to IoT devices and therefore I prefer the better 2.4Ghz capacity for concurrent client connections. In mid-August 2020, I published an in-depth review of the RT-AX86U and called it “arguably the best Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router” for a good reason — the router has been one of the best.

The part before that -- 3.0.0.4 in the screenshot -- is the Linux kernel version that will also change, albeit much less frequently. It's even more significant and should also be taken into consideration.

Be noted: This is an early stage beta, there might be bugs. This version can be downgraded via web GUI only.ASUS makes no representations or warranties about this product’s compatibility with future standards. The company’s select models — including RT-AX86U Pro, RT-AX88U Pro, GT-AX11000 Pro, GT-AXE16000, GT-AX6000, ZenWiFi Pro ET12/ XT12, and ExpertWiFi Series — also support a more advanced VLAN feature allowing users to customize their network ports accordingly. Additionally, these models generally share the same Pro-only features on top of the standard set available in all Asus routers. The takeaway So my question is, first, do you recommend upgrading to WiFi6 (is it going to give me improvement in connection quality assuming most of my clients are still WiFi5?) and if yes, which one of those would you recommend?
