About this deal

The next four parts are the practical application of those in-scope principles and topics, including important safety requirements with a predominant focus on reducing the risk of injury and damage. The concept is simple; when starting a new installation, you should consult the Regs and ensure you’ve considered all aspects that might impact your specific scenario. It should then be used as a reference on equipment and environment, and also as an assurance guide, either once you’ve completed the installation or on review of an existing installation. Join CEF in partnership with the IET at a free TechTalk designed to help you understand how the latest changes to the 18th Edition wiring regulations affect you.

This is an entirely new chapter. Historically, utility companies have managed the public transmission and distribution network from the point of view of having central production adapted to demand variation. The objective of this chapter is to provide requirements, such that, low-voltage electrical installations are compatible with the current and future ways to deliver safely the electrical energy to current-using equipment either from the public network or from other local sources. The following paragraphs review how a specific ‘part’ of the book may materialise in an examination question format. We’ll be using section 6 for this, which alludes to the inspection and testing of electrical installations. Allocate an appropriate length of time dependent on each section’s volume of questions. This approach should be deployed for both revision and in the exam itself. Any other notes or materials that could be deemed to unfairly advantage you in your attempts to answer any of the exam questions. The examination consists of sixty questions, and must be completed within two hours. This gives an average of two minutes per question. Candidates are allowed to enter the examination hall with a copy of the 18th edition bs7671 book. You should use the book in accordance to the questions asked. Time Considerations Candidates must attain at least a 60% score to successfully pass the exam. Results are graded as a straight-forward pass or fail. Although it’s a difficult concept to master, students should not become overly concerned with their final result during revision periods. If you’re confident that you’ve gained a good understanding of the principles and practicalities of the book, your score will look after itself. Examination structure & content Candidates should also be aware that only in the most severe cases (which should have relevant components isolated anyway), can installations not remain in use while defects are being repaired. It should never be an electrician’s intention to leave a client without electricity at any stage of the testing process. that the load current contains no DC components. Chapter 54 - Earthing arrangements and protective conductors Ultimately preventing a collision is the single most important thing. So, if the action of the give way vessel alone isn’t sufficient to prevent a collision or it takes no action at all, the stand on vessel must also take action. If a collision does occur, then both vessels may be found to be at fault to a certain extent. Get to grips with the rules of the road

The 18th Edition book is predominantly used by, but not limited to, electricians and electrical contractors. If you are an electrician, you are probably already extremely familiar with the Regs. It not only supports domestic and commercial installations, but it also underpins electrical practices in environments like agricultural premises, caravans, external lighting, mobile units, temporary installations, fairgrounds, highway equipment and street lighting. Minor changes have been made to the model forms and guidance for recipients. These include the addition of fields Because of this patterned history, the 18th Edition is often known by a variety of names. As such, when you hear people in the industry talking about any of the following, they will be talking about the 18th edition:

Understanding how to use the Wiring Regulations is recognised across the industry as an increasingly important skill. For that reason, there is a recognised qualification that tests your ability to use the 18th Edition book. Has much changed since the 17th Edition?

Regulation 514.12.2, concerning the RCD notice, has been modified and now contains an exception for domestic (household) premises in certain situations. On September 26 th, 1881 the world’s first fully electric-powered public street lighting was turned on in a town called Godalming in Surrey. These lights were provided by the German firm Siemens and used to replace the gas lighting system. However, all was not completely well with the new system. Indeed, as soon as power was switched on there were reports of problems with the wiring. This was particularly apparent on the side streets where the lights barely lit up the ground below them. More concerning, were reports of people coming to harm on exposed wires. By 1884 the town abandoned the project. Regulation 651.1 defines when this testing and inspection is applicable, encouraging electricians to ask one key question: is the installation or circuit safe for continued use?Regulation 514.12 (Notices: periodic inspection and testing) now contains an exception for domestic (household) premises in certain situations. Chapter 64 contains information on ‘Initial Verification’ and Chapter 65 details ‘Periodical Inspection & Testing’ guidance. Although these areas have substantial cross-over, understanding which subject alludes to which chapter is critical in composing a positive answer. There are also four annexes which are often ignored. These cover the positioning and technical details of lights and shapes, additional signals for fishing vessels fishing in close proximity, technical details of sound signal appliances and distress signals. This section includes changes to automatic disconnection of supply and additional protection. Section 717 - Mobile or transportable units Understand the requirements for inspection and testing of electrical installations (4 questions, 7%)

This section outlines the relevant tests that must be performed on any installation prior to it being energized. Below is a full breakdown of the number of questions each ‘part’ of the book represents. Its worth noting that this information is also available in the City & Guilds handbook. Note the volume of questions referring to Parts 4 & 5 of the book: these account for a massive 48% of all responses required. This is unsurprising given the large amount of content in these sections, and individuals should allocate appropriate time to these areas when revising. Section breakdown With so many changes afoot, it is easy to see the importance of maintaining and updating your knowledge of the Regs as an electrotechnical professional. 18th Edition Book in Practice Regulation 514.9.2 has been introduced to advise that all diagrams, charts, and information or instruction notices comply with the applicable standards specified.

The IET Wiring Regulations

Appendix 4 includes minor changes concerning a cable surrounded by thermal insulation. Appendix 6 Model forms for certification and reporting Table 51 has been modified slightly to take into account changes of colour identification for DC and abbreviations have been added. Regulation 411.4.2 now recommends an additional connection to Earth, by means of an earth electrode in accordance with Chapter 54, is made to the main earthing terminal. Chapter 42 Protection against thermal effects Is all about the book. What BS7671 does and does not apply to (Chapter 11 ‘Scope’) along with the purpose of the regulations (Chapter 12 ‘Object’) and the basic principles that all electrical installations should adhere to (Chapter 13 ‘Fundamental Principles’).
