The chocolate Misfits cereal is one of the best-smelling foods my nose has ever had the privilege of sniffing. I’ve been reviewing protein bars long enough to know that the bars won’t actually look like that, but that is just too enticing to pass up.

When you open the box, it smells like you just stepped into a bakery where all they bake are chocolate donuts topped with chocolate frosting. A perfect example is Barebells: I absolutely love their protein bars ( Fulfil bars are extremely similar) but the plant-based Barebells protein bars really fell short for me.If you’re unfamiliar with Misfits, they started selling these plant-based protein bars in 2020, and they’ve exploded onto the scene with very high praise. LOW SUGAR, LOW CALORIES - Each 40g serving has less than 1g of sugar and with 150 calories per serving it is low in calories. No artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. This is a chocolate cereal without the guilt. The chocolate Misfits cereal definitely improves in milk, but not substantially. That bitter aftertaste is almost completely eliminated when eaten with milk, which is awesome, but the overall chocolate flavor is still very much subpar. An overwhelming number of food products that claim to be healthy are made with artificial sweeteners – this means brands can make claims about a cereal being low-sugar whilst still tasting sweet. However, regular consumption of artificial sweeteners has been linked to changes in the gut microbiome and they are something I advise my clients to actively avoid. At the same time, look out for real sugar on an ingredients label, which can be disguised as cane juice, dextrose, isoglucose, jaggery, maltose and barley malt.” – Clarissa Watch Out For Wheat

With 150 calories per serving along with 14g of protein, it’s the highest protein plant-based cereal I’ve come across. Considering these are plant-powered bars, I knew that I needed to adjust my expectations going into this review. Generally speaking, plant-based protein bars don’t taste quite as good as their dairy-based counterparts. Traditional breakfast cereals tend to be loaded with sugar and are low in both fibre and protein, a combination that will send you on a blood sugar rollercoaster. Instead, look for a cereal that is high in protein, low in sugar and rich in fibre – these are the three macronutrients to be looking for.
