The final chapter in the decades-long dino saga claims dominion over 4K Ultra HD with a top-notch and eye-catching HEVC H.265 encode. Shot on a combination of traditional 35mm, 65mm and 8K digital cameras, the native 4K transfer sports exceptional clarity and definition from start to finish although a few CG sequences seem to dip in some spots and can look a tad softer than others. Nevertheless, the individual hairs and whiskers of the cast are distinct, the stitching in the costumes are discrete, and the surrounding foliage of the Biosyn Sanctuary are highly-detailed. Even the many fast-paced action scenes maintain impressive clarity, and facial complexions are always revealing with lifelike textures exposing minute, negligible blemishes. A consistently thin layer of natural grain is also present throughout, providing the 2.00:1 image with an attractive film-like quality that videophiles are sure to appreciate. Now again, for the first three films (finished in 1993, 1997, and 2001, respectively) the visual effects resolution was sub 2K and often 1K. As such, short of extraordinary efforts (specifically, completely re-doing all of the visual effects in native 4K resolution – which has not happened here), those shots are just not going to look as good as the rest of the film. Some of you may be wondering: Why not re-do all of the visual effects in native 4K resolution? There are a few reasons. Cost, for one (but that’s not as often the driver as you’d think). There’s also the fact that doing so would alter the original experience of the film… and keep in mind that the original Jurassic Park’s visual effects – primitive though they are by today’s standards – were revolutionary at the time. But often the biggest obstacle is simply this: It’s possible that many of the original digital animation files no longer exist. Either no one ever thought they’d be needed again so they weren’t saved, or they may have become corrupted (as can happen to magnetic media over time), or the surviving files may be incompatible with today’s rendering software.

4K Extras

If you know "Valeyard", you know the chances of him being so forgiving and actually praising the person behind a 35mm scan are usually zero. The story itself is actually rather ordinary, even the inclusion of the two children (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello) seems intended to attract younger viewers. But it must be said, the film intentionally places more emphasis on a sense of adventure and excitement than on the science or the possibilities. Spielberg and company utilized the best available CG technology of the time and smartly balanced that with the amazing, lifelike animatronics of Stan Winston and his team. The plot is just engaging enough to maintain our attention while being overwhelmed by the visionary and spectacular visuals. Jurassic Park continues to capture our imagination and serves as proof of what Hollywood magic can truly deliver. (Movie Rating: 5/5) While not directly taken from any specific piece of material by Crichton, the second sequel pieces together a few elements not used in the previous two books, namely the aviary filled with Pteranodons. It does make for some entertaining moments that fans of the books can delight in, though the story will still leave much to be desired. Grating throughout the whole show is the addition of Téa Leoni as the understandably worried mother trying to find her son in this lost world. Joining her quest is her ex-husband played by William H. Macy and Grant's protégé Billy (Alessandro Nivola). And like Neill, everyone is made to step out of the way and allow the visual effects to work their magic. Sadly, by the time we come to this third outing, much of the spellbinding charm and enchantment of the illusion starts to wear a bit thin, and all we're left with is a quaint amusement and a desire to revisit the first movie instead. Universal has released the legendary Steven Spielberg film 'Jurassic Park' to the UHD format alongside ' The Lost World,' ' Jurassic Park III,' and ' Jurassic World,' all available only in bundles, both a DigiBook and a Best Buy exclusive SteelBook set. This film's UHD video presentation could have been better, could I haven’t seen the raw scan that the fans did, only the released version. I do know that it was handled by people with extensive experience in the industry, and that it was professionally colour corrected and graded to the projected print. I also know from viewing 35mm films recently, that a lot of films look similar to Jurassic Park when projected from their theatrical prints. This does serve as a good example of why home video release often don’t match the look of theatrical prints. A good release however can still strike a balance between preserving the original flair and creativity of the film-maker, whilst enhancing and optimising the viewing experience for home use. For example, the darkness of the T-Rex chase scene could never be made out if not brightened for older analogue formats. It’d be great to see a more faithful release of this film in the future, but given the revisionism of the 3D release that may be a long while off.
