Detective Joseph Thorne discovers the Lament Configuration while working on a series of sadistic ritualistic murders with connections to an enigmatic figure known only as The Engineer. After sleeping with a sex worker he goes to the bathroom, taking the box with him. He sits and tries to solve the box. He has what appears to be a bad dream. What he does not realise is that he is trapped in Hell, constantly awakening next to the box on the bathroom floor. In the 1980s, Clive Barker changed the face of horror fiction, throwing out the rules to expose new vistas of terror and beauty, expanding the horizons for every genre writer who followed him. With Hellraiser, his first feature film as director, he did the same for cinema. In October 2015, Arrow Films released the film on Blu-ray in the UK along with Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth in a Scarlet Box edition featuring new 2K restorations and extensive list of bonus features including feature-length documentaries on the first 2 films and a bonus disc containing additional content such as 2 short films by Clive Barker. [34] The Scarlet Box is now out of print in the UK and replaced by a 3-film edition of the set without the bonus disc. He even keeps a good humor about how "latex" some of the effects look.
