That’s most likely because he was a really good writer, and not because he was involved in a real-life murder mystery at a young age. Poe had a troubled personal life, marked by financial struggles, alcoholism, and the loss of several loved ones, including his wife Virginia, who died of tuberculosis at a young age. Poe died in mysterious circumstances in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 7, 1849, at the age of 40.
