The Captain announces the point of impact (for example, "TORPEDO LAUNCHED, IMPACT IN C6"), but does not draw the trajectory on his sheet. Then the First mate erases all marks on the torpedo gauge. But I do have to admit, as much as I can rave about the game, the excitement does wear off after some time. The first few games are a thrill ride, but that glow fades. Aside from the Captain, the roles are pretty straightforward, and there’s not as much to explore as far as strategy goes. The First Mate pretty much does what the Captain tells them to do. The Engineer has a bit of a mini-game, but it’s not particularly deep. The Radio Operator has a unique challenge, but they’re almost off playing their own game. The more you play, the more the simplicity of these roles reveal themselves. Turn-based (top) vs real-time boards. That’s basically the game. Find the other sub. Shoot them with torpedoes or drive them near your mines. The first sub to four damage points loses. It’s delightfully stressful and loads of fun even in that first learning game. Five different maps, several with slightly different rules, keep the game unpredictable and challenging (in an arctic map, for example, you’ll suffer damage for surfacing except at a few scarce open water holes). It certainly teases an expansion or two. The other systems, dropping a mine and silence (or as we call it ‘Silent Running’), do not halt the action, the captain needs only to announce it.

GENERAL ADVICE

Torpedoes on the other hand are more immediate. When you launch a torpedo, you need to announce a point between 1-4 spaces away from you. You also need to draw a path through the point without hitting an island. In regards to the enemy’s position, it can also cause one or two damages. Torpedoes can also destroy you or your mines. To beat the enemy, you must cooperate with your teammates. Only the team who best communicates and works together will survive the encounter... Well, why didn’t you say so! In that case, head east! Load up those torpedoes, and lets keep our engines running. Enemy in sight!

I am not happy with the campaign outright eliminating the weapons included in Upgrade One. I would have wished for a thoughtful, inclusive design that allows every one of the game's modules to be combined with the rest. If you buy and use this expansion, you will be partially shelving your other expansion, and vice versa. The Radio Operator will be able to narrow the enemy's position down further with the help of drones and sonar, which will be activated by the Captain or the First Mate.When he hears the announcements, he takes out his transparent sheet and tries to locate where the enemy is.
